On Tuesday, September 7 the Santa Anna girls visited San Angelo Grape Creek in a junior varsity and varsity doubleheader. In the junior varisty game the ever improving girls beat the Eagles 25-18 and 25-21. The varsity girls coming off a week's worth of rest played a sharp frist game finishing on top 25-11. In games two and three the girls played a little too relaxed but were able to win by scores of 25-17 and 25-22.
The girls played a rematch game with Albany in the DeLeon Tournament on Thursday. In the previous match Albany had come out as the victor. This match was no different as Santa Anna played very sloppy ball. Service errors, service receptions and the inability to hit the ball over the net were the rule rather than the exception. Santa Anna lost by scores of 25-18 and 25-23.
The loser's bracket on Saturday pitted the Lady Mountaineers against a very competitve Brock team. In the first game Santa Anna played extremely well but could not keep a sustained rally and lost to Brock 21-25. The deciding factor in this game was the brilliant jump serves of a Brock girl as she scored eight consecutive points managing to literally control the Lady Mountaineers single handedly. Usually after playing hard and losing a tough game, the girls have had difficulty recovering from tough losses. This game was different as the Lady S.A.M.'s played with intensity and as they did in game one, showed flashes of brilliance. The defensive play improved tremendoulsy against Brock and despite losing 25-19, the girls look as if they are back on track to playing good volleyball. The Lady Mountaineers Achilles heel in this game was serves. Santa Anna will play another good volleyball team in Abilene Christian on Tuesday and will have their work cut out, but by continuting to improve on their team play the Lady Mouuntaineers will make their mark down the road.
