The Risk is Real - Serving our Country

Remembering those that have served and those that are serving our country.

You know sometimes it doesn't hit you until it is personal.

I received the following from Charlotte Tucker over the weekend:
Just to update people who have been praying for and asking about Allen Tucker, he returned back to the United States on late Friday afternoon. He has finished his year in Iraq, and is now in Washington state catching up on some much needed sleep, and spending time with his new wife Mylene.

Please remember these Santa Anna folks that are serving our country in military combat, training, or support: Maricela (Marty) Siller, Clay Stewardson, Eddie Dawson, Ike Garza, James Watson, Austin Voss, Randy Casey, Mike Montgomery II, Mark Rutherford, Allen Tucker, James Culpepper, Shane Watson, Brandon Beloat, Glen Donham, and Jeffrey Watson.

1933 American soldiers or sailors have died in Operation Enduring Freedom as reported by the Department of Defense and the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count. Pray for our country, its' leaders, and our soldiers and sailors.

Please remember the many serving as volunteers for various groups and those that may be working for the media or one of the many Department of Defense contractors that have employees in support roles in Iraq including Santa Anna's Jason Dane. These folks are serving an important part in the rebuilding of Iraq and the danger is just as great if not more for them as it is for soldiers.

The Iraq Coalition Casualty Count has also tracked the deaths of 102 American contractors working in Iraq so the risk is real.

Many service men and women return home safely. Operation Tribute to Freedom Homecoming Photographs.

We must never forget the sacrifices of men and women serving our country from all generations. Tex Wright recently sent me this information:

The Coleman County Historical Commission has started work on a new project. Since this year is the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII, we (Texas Historical Commission statewide) have started a project to honor the ones who served.
We (I) have set up a Web Page to keep people posted on what is being done and to ask for their help in remembering those Men and Women.

Welcome Exes

A very special SantaAnnaNews.com welcome to all the Santa Anna High School Ex Students!

We are glad that you are coming home to Santa Anna. If Santa Anna is already or still your home I hope that you and the exes from out of town have a nice visit and get to see lots of old friends and make lots of new ones.

Did you got to see the Tailgate Party and Bonfire? It was the first time that we had a bonfire in many years and probably the last for several to come. What I remembered about bonfires is how much work went into building them and how it seemed like someone always got hurt hauling or stacking wood. The Santa Anna VFD was in full force to handle the lighting and make sure the fire didn't get away and it was a good thing because the wind started blowing pretty hard about the time the fires started burning good.

Bonfire

I really think the Tailgate Party is a great idea whoever came up with it... This year's was a little less organized than some years before.

Cheerleaders Cheered

Band Played

Dennis Absher, aka One of the Noise Boys, gave a great pep talk to the players and fans. It would have been nice to hear some of the players or coaches speak.

Boys made some Noise!

I think the kids there wanted to have more music played too. I would bet they would welcome a volunteer to DJ next years' Tailgate.

Electric slidin'

Even SAM was gettin' down!

There were some great burgers cooked up by John Hensley and served up by the rest of the Booster Club

Burger time

There was also a football pinata over the goalpost that was pretty cool.

Ryan takes swing at the Pinata

I took a lot of pictures at the Tailgate Party and Bonfire. Most of them are not too good, not that any of them are ever any good. The poor lighting is pretty hard to compensate for. But I still had fun taking them and thought I would share the ones that aren't too bad in a special Tailgate Party and Bonfire Photo Album.

Everyone should watch out for snakes around the football field particularly since there have been several killed there even before the bonfire. I heard that there were six rattlesnakes killed around the South end as they are starting to move and since the trees have been cleared on the West side they are sure to be moving now especially after the bonfire. I know that sometimes kids play behind the bleachers and the folks walk around the track in the late evenings should be especially careful.

Well welcome home exes, have great Friday, and go Mountaineers!

Santa Anna National Bank

All of you exes be sure and go by the Santa Anna National Bank while you are in town Friday and see the newly remodeled interior and exterior.

I had hoped to go by and take some photos of the inside on Friday but I have just about burned all of my vacation going to volleyball and basketball games this year! So you will have to go by and see it for yourself...

Homecoming

Well this will be a busy week here in Santa Anna with the SAHS Homecoming.

Myra Dean, Tasha Zarate, Jesse Hensley, Bianca Dean

The activities will begin with a Tailgate Party and Bonfire at the school scheduled for Wednesday night. There will be a parade Friday at 2:00 but I am not sure of the route. I think it will begin in the downtown area this year and end at the school with a pep rally scheduled to be held in Mountaineer Stadium at 2:30. The Friday Night football game will begin at 7:30 but the last couple of years the recognition of the Coming Home Queen and the Ex-Student of the Year have started before the game at 7:00 so be sure and get there early so that you don't miss it and to get a good seat as the Mountaineers take on the Lohn Eagles in District 11 Six Man action. The normal crowning of the SAHS Homecoming Queen and Court will be at halftime.

Mountaineer Football

The Mountaineers took on their Coleman County rival the Panther Creek Panthers Friday night on their home field in District 11 Six Man football and for the first time won the game. The Mountaineers have struggled against the former State Champion Panthers during their first 3 years in Six Man. Friday night proved to be different as the Six Man 45 Point Mercy Rule was called upon to end the game with a score of 74 to 27 with 4:09 left to play in the fourth quarter.

The game was not without drama as two players from Panther Creek, three from Santa Anna, and one Santa Anna coach were ejected from the game. I think someone forgot to tell the referees about the level of passion that these two teams played each other at. I have been to a lot of football games over the years and never seen a worse case of officials taking such a stand in a game. Most of the hits were good and clean on both sides. Sure I don't hear everything that they hear or see everything that they see but they got out of control on this one. Even the Santa Anna coach that was ejected was simply cheering on his players, with obnoxious passion. But I never knew obnoxious passion was rule violation. I really think that he was ejected because of the enormous amount of noise coming from Mountaineer fans about one of the bad calls!

And did you see the amount of Santa Anna fans at the game? Well I can tell you that we have filled the lacking Panther Creek visitors stands on more than one occasion, but I think that this is the first time that we have ever doubled or maybe tripled the Panther Creek fans. And let me tell that the Santa Anna fans came to make some noise!

Lady Mountaineers Volleyball

The Lady Mountaineers had another bad Saturday of volleyball as they dropped a non-district game to Albany. This was hopefully the last of, I think, a six game losing streak as the Lady Mountaineers resume District play against a tough team from Veribest in Santa Anna.

Lady Mountaineers Volleyball- Part II

The Lady Mountaineers broke the streak in District volleyball action Tuesday night in Santa Anna as they defeated the Lady Falcons from Veribest. I believe this was the first District volleyball game that these girls have won in three years.

Saint Willow Baptist Church Fundraisers

Saint Willow Baptist Church in Santa Anna, TX located on the Brady Highway is trying to raise money to fix electrical wiring, new doors, and install New air conditioner units. There has been fundraisers set up for a few weeks now every Saturday to help raise the money.

Our goal is approximately $5000 and should help take care of everything needed to be done to the church. Last Saturday there was a snow cone/refreshments stand and the church also sold chili dogs and frito pie and raised about $200. This Saturday there will be a barbecue where they will be selling plate lunches for $5.00 a plate. Including barbecue, potato salad, and beans.

We would appreciate all the help we can get in trying to raise this money for our church. There is an account at the Santa Anna National Bank for St.Willow Baptist Church. Any donations of any kind would be gladly accepted.
