The Risk is Real - Serving our Country
Remembering those that have served and those that are serving our country.
You know sometimes it doesn't hit you until it is personal.
Please remember these Santa Anna folks that are serving our country in military combat, training, or support: Maricela (Marty) Siller, Clay Stewardson, Eddie Dawson, Ike Garza, James Watson, Austin Voss, Randy Casey, Mike Montgomery II, Mark Rutherford, Allen Tucker, James Culpepper, Shane Watson, Brandon Beloat, Glen Donham, and Jeffrey Watson.
1897 American soldiers or sailors have died in Operation Enduring Freedom as reported by the Department of Defense and the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count. Pray for our country, its' leaders, and our soldiers and sailors.
Please remember the many serving as volunteers for various groups and those that may be working for the media or one of the many Department of Defense contractors that have employees in support roles in Iraq including Santa Anna's Jason Dane. These folks are serving an important part in the rebuilding of Iraq and the danger is just as great if not more for them as it is for soldiers.
The
Iraq Coalition Casualty Count has also tracked the deaths of 98 American contractors working in Iraq so the risk is real.
Many service men and women return home safely. Operation Tribute to Freedom Homecoming Photographs.
We must never forget the sacrifices of men and women serving our country from all generations. Tex Wright recently sent me this information:
The Coleman County Historical Commission has started work on a new project.
Since this year is the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII, we (Texas Historical Commission statewide) have started a project to honor the ones who served.
We (I) have set up a Web Page to keep people posted on what is being done and to ask for their help in remembering those Men and Women.
The Web Page is:Coleman County Historical Comm.

Birthday
Wednesday was my Grandson, James Dawson Rambo's 2nd Birthday. We had a party at the City Park with family and friends last Sunday.
Two years ago this day he wasn't supposed to be here yet.. he was supposed to have been a little Halloween spook.
He came into our world smaller than a bag of sugar and just as sweet.
He hasn't gotten very big in size yet but he sure makes up for his size with his spirit.
G-Pa and G-Pooh, along with his Aunt Jessie, have spoiled him a little and loved him a lot.
For his Birthday we got him an electric four wheeler. He has watched his dad work on and ride his which is a kick start and well... you will just have to see for yourself...
The video was taken with my still camera and the quality was much better than what I could put on the Web but I think you will still get it OK.

Brock Nips Lady Mountaineers
Submitted by Coach Bob Libby
On Tuesday Santa Anna hosted a three-way match with Grape Creek and De Leon. The junior varsity girls won their first match of the season beating Grape Creek in three exciting games 25-18 , 23-25 and 25-20 . The varsity played Grape Creek in the next match and in the first two games looked extremely sharp. Santa Anna won those games by scores of 25-11 and 25-12. In game three the Lady SAM’s tapered off quite a bit with Grape Creek squeaking out a 25-23 victory. Santa Anna did play a little bit better in game four but struggled at times to win 25-20.
In the second match Santa Anna played De Leon and manhandled them 25-8 and 25-17. The Lady Mountaineers played with more intensity and the scores showed it.
Thursday was a big day as the Lady Mountaineers went to De Leon to play in the last invitational tournament of the season. Albany had already defeated Santa Anna in round robin play in Abilene two weeks ago. The Lady SAM’s came prepared to play on this day! Santa Anna defeated Albany 25-18 and 25-17 in probably one of the better played matches of the season. One of the key factors in the victory was the fact that Santa Anna missed one serve the entire match and that did not occur until the 24th point of game two. Another factor was the defensive play of libero Raelee Watson. She did an outstanding job of being in position to pass off of Albany’s hits which led to good sets and big kills by the rest of the team. Jessica Moreno came in and played extremely well off the bench to help out in the victory.
The Lady SAM’s advanced to the semifinal match against a very talented Brock team. Nerves played a big factor in game one as Brock pounced on Santa Anna with a 25-7 victory. In the second game the Santa Anna team made a big turnaround with much better passes and sets to even the match with a 25-20 victory over Brock. Santa Anna continued the third game where it had left off and built up a 24-22 lead as both teams played extremely long rallies throughout the match to keep the game suspenseful. Things really looked promising but then the Lady Mountaineers thoughts about not losing the game led to some disastrous plays and that is when the roof fell in. At game point, a missed a serve enabled Brock to regain their composure and put doubts in the Lady Mountaineers minds. Brock was then able to refocus and serve out with a 26-24 victory.
Santa Anna then played Hico for third place. History repeated itself once again in tournament play as the Lady Mountaineers were unable to rebound on the same day after a difficult loss. Santa Anna played lethargic and as a result lost by scores of 12-25, 16-25 and 18-25. Santa Anna’s record is now 12-4 for the season. The Lady Mountaineers have Tuesday off and then will travel to Junction to play both Junction and Harper on Saturday.

Whatever happened to..?
Whatever happened to... the "Whatever happened to..?" series?
One of my favorite and one of many readers favorites.. the SantaAnnaNews.com exclusive "Whatever happened to..?" series kind of got put on hold during one of the storms when our flatbed scanner's power supply got blown up!
I took a few photos of some old annual pictures but they didn't come out very good. We have an old scanner that I am going to try and bring back from the grave when I get a little spare time.
With the sounds of football and the shorter days I know that Homecoming will soon be here. There has been some interest in a classes of the 80's reunion and with Homecoming scheduled for September 30th and October 1st there isn't much time left for planning. The ones that that are interested so far are from out of town and looking for someone here in town to host it.
Send an e-mail to news@santaannanews.com and I will try to connect everyone that is interested.
Why not make SantaAnnaNews.com your Homecoming headquarters and send me your class's reunion information?
Mountaineer Football
The Mountaineers took on the Robert Lee Steers in the 2005 home opener.
The Chain Gang was ready
The Noise Boys were almost ready
The SAM Band was ready
The Cheerleaders were ready
The Hartman Brothers, Stanley and Eddie, and in the center - the "Voice of the Mountaineers" Rob Cheaney was ready
And the Mountaineers were ready - for some football!
The Mountaineers looked very tough with Ben McIver putting on quite show as he lead the Mountaineers scoring most of the points in the 87-45 win against the Steers.
Ben takes off on his first touchdown of the game as he escapes a Robert Lee defender as Rudy Enriquez looks on
See the Sports Page for the photo album of the game, band, and cheerleaders!
The Mountaineers will take on the #4 ranked team, Highland, this Friday in Santa Anna so it will be quite a test for the Mountaineers.
Lady Mountaineers Volleyball
The Lady Mountaineers didn't fair so well in the second and third rounds of the Deleon Volleyball Tournament Saturday after winning decidely over the ladies from Albany on Thursday. In round two they faced a tough team from Brock even without their star player who was signing a letter of intent to play basketall at Texas Tech. In round three for third place in the Tournament the girls took on a team from Hico that they just couldn't seem to get it going against and the Lady Mountaineers came away empty handed. See the Sports Page for the photos.
Weekend
Cindy and I made it out to Mountaineer Stadium Friday night for the first home game and our first football game to see this year. We spent most of Saturday cheering on the Lady Mountaineers and Sunday we went to our Grandson Dawson's 2nd birthday party at the City Park. All this fun didn't leave much time for rest or the News so I will have to do some catching up later this week.. Thanks for coming by and come back soon!

Saint Willow Baptist Church Fundraisers
Saint Willow Baptist Church in Santa Anna, Tx located on the Brady Highway is trying to raise money to fix electrical wiring, new doors, and install New air conditioner units. There has been fundraisers set up for a few weeks now every Saturday to help raise the money.
Our goal is approximately $5000 and should help take care of everything needed to be done to the church. Last Saturday there was a snow cone/refreshments stand and the church also sold chili dogs and frito pie and raised about $200. This Saturday there will be a barbecue where they will be selling plate lunches for $5.00 a plate. Including barbecue, potato salad, and beans.
We would appreciate all the help we can get in trying to raise this money for our church. There is an account at the Santa Anna National Bank for St.Willow Baptist Church. Any donations of any kind would be gladly accepted.
