Football Friday

Well football fans it is Friday again and what's this? No Santa Anna Mountaineer game to go to? That's right.. The Mountaineers have a bye week before taking on the District 12 Champ Blanket Tigers in Rising Star next Friday.

So what to do, where to go, and what game to watch? I think that Cindy and I are going to go watch former Santa Anna Mountaineer, Rusty Buzzard, coach his Coleman Bluecats to a win over the Early Longhorns in Early to clinch a playoff spot.

Well you might have wondered what took me so long to get the photos of last Friday's game up.. or maybe you didn't. It seems I had about as bad a night taking photos as the Mountaineers did playing football. For about the first quarter of the game I had my camera set wrong since I took some pre game photos of the parent's night and they didn't turn out so great either. Anyhow I finally got a few of them up in the photo album on the Sports Page. Here are some of the better ones.. I guess..

Oh, and before I forget, did you see all those great signs at the game? You might not have seen them if you stayed in the stands so be sure and check them out in the photos. I understand that some of the Noise Boyz put them up before the game. What great spirits these guys have been. Keep up the good work and keep it positive!

Feeding Your Family Without Starving Your Wallet

by Dr. Jenna Anding, Associate Professor and Extension Nutrition Specialist

With prices rising on everything we purchase, it can be difficult to make our food dollars stretch enough to feed our families.

It seems that everyone is trying to save money by reducing food costs. Being a thrifty shopper takes some skill, but there are ways that consumers can lower their food costs. Dr. Jenna Anding, Associate Professor and Extension Nutrition Specialist for Texas Cooperative Extension, gives these suggestions for how to:

Save Food Dollars With Smart Shopping Skills.

1. Keep a "short list" - a list of items that you need to buy (a notepad attached to the refrigerator with a magnet works great). When you run out of something, write it down as soon as possible.

2. Study the store's sale advertisements.

3. Look at the foods you already have on hand. Use these foods, along with store specials, to plan your meals and snacks.

4. After you plan your meals and snacks, make a shopping list. Be sure to include the items you listed on your short list.

5. Check your coupons to see if any can be used with the items that you have on your shopping list.

6. Make a list of non-food items (soap, laundry, personal care items). Can you buy these from a discount store? Do you have coupons for any of these items?

7. When shopping, consider store brands over national brands to save money. Even with coupons, some store brands may be cheaper.

8. Think twice about convenience foods. Pancake and cake mixes, along with canned soups, fruits, and vegetables, can help you save time and money. Other foods like frozen dinners and coating mixes for meat and poultry may not save you enough time to justify the cost.

9. Check out bakery thrift stores for great buys on bread. Save money on fruits and vegetables by shopping at farmers markets.

10. If possible, shop alone, when you are not hungry, and when store is not crowded. This helps you to get in and out of the store in the shortest amount of times.

11. Store food properly to maintain quality and to avoid spoilage.

For more practical information about these suggestions and other ways to reduce food costs when grocery shopping, come to the November Better Living for Texans class entitled "Feeding Your Family without Starving Your Wallet." The class will be Thursday, November 10. at Loaves & Fishes in Coleman, at the corner of Pecan and Nueces, at 6:00 p.m. The program is FREE of charge, and everyone is welcome. Debbie Hailey, County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences, will demonstrate how to adopt cost-cutting practices to reduce food costs. If you have any questions, call Debbie at 325-625-4519.

Happy Halloween!

We had lots of little spooks and goblins trick or treating Monday night for Halloween. There were several that had really cool costumes. Some let Cindy and I take their pictures and some ran away after getting their candy.

I fixed up a little Halloween photo album of the ones that let us take theirs.

Mountaineer Football

The Santa Anna Mountaineers got a taste of what the competition will be like in the playoffs from the defending State Champion Richland Springs Coyotes in Friday night's final district game of 2005 for the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers will have a bye week this week to heel up after the Coyotes beat the Mountaineers by a score of Richland Springs 56 Santa Anna 8 at the half.

Richland Springs put on quite a show with Sophomore Tyler Ethridge as he showed how he lead the Coyotes last year to the State Championship. I got to watch him several times in last year's run in the playoffs and he is virtually unstoppable.

The Mountaineers will hopefully rebound for what I think will be the Bi-District playoff with the winner of District 12 which will probably be Blanket with Richland Springs taking on the second place team which will probably be May. I will let you know as soon as it is finalized but I think we will play Blanket in Rising Star maybe.

I will also get the photos up a little later this week as I have time.

Mountaineer Football Playoff T-shirts

The Mountaineer Booster Club will be selling Mountaineer Football playoff T-shirts ($10 plus $1.50 for 2,3,4X) and sweat shirts ($14 plus $1.50 for 2,3,4X). These will be a black 50/50 shirt, with design on front and roster on back. A design proof will be available at the Friday 10/28 Richland Springs game. Orders will be taken until 10/31 5pm. Someone will be available at the game or you can contact Peggy Hensley, Tony Watson, Amanda Ellerbe or Janice Fellers.
