Friday Night Lights!

Well the Mountaineers will be off this Friday... so what to do?

We could go watch the Bluecats and Longhorns in Early. We watched part of this game from the road last year after the Panther Creek game... and we went to Early a couple of years ago and watched them play... there is barely enough room forthe regular Bluecat fans...

We could go watch the Panthers play...

We could stay home and watch the Dillon Panther on NBC's Friday Night Lights TV show..

Or we could go be ON the show like Old Bluecat/still trying to earn his Eagle wings/wanna be Dillon Panther and TV star Terry Thompson. I work with Terry and his wife Jennifer and they were walk on extras in last week's filming of Friday Night Lights in Austin. The episode should air in late November or early December. See Terry's Friday Night Lights pictures .

FIRE SAFETY WINNERS!

Coleman County Telephone Cooperative, Inc. recently sponsored a fire prevention poster contest in the Santa Anna and Panther Creek elementary schools. The theme for the posters was "Practice Your Escape Plan."

Pictured below are the winners in each age division.

From Santa Anna Elementary, winner in the under 6 age group was Kayden Russell, son of Brandi Martin.

Jaylie Jones, winner in the 6-8 years age group, is the daughter of Ray and Betsy Jones.

The 9-12 age group winner was Pricilla Smith, daughter of Steve and Lauwanna Smith.

From Panther Creek Elementary, two winners were selected from the 6-8 age group.

They were Nathan McMahon, son of Lorie McMahon.

and also, Cody Hamblin, son of Cathy Hamblin.

The winner in the 9-12 age group was Chariti Warren, daughter of Dan & Lean Warren.

Each winner at Santa Anna was presented with a bag of prizes, which included a $10 gift certificate, by Leanna Jones, office manager of the Cooperative. The Panther Creek winners were presented the same prizes by Gay Abernathy, facility network specialist for the Cooperative.

The Cooperative congratulates all the winners and expresses appreciation to all those students who participated. The contest helped the students to realize the importance of practicing an escape plan, in case there is ever a fire in their home or school. Some of the posters will be on display at the Cooperative headquarters in Santa Anna for the next two weeks. Coleman County Telephone Cooperative also provided trick-or-treat bags and a brochure on fire safety to each elementary student at both schools. The Cooperative will have some "treats" for elementary students who would like to stop by the office from 3:00 - 5:00 P.M. on October 31st.

4-H Achievement Banquet 2007

The 2007 Coleman County 4-H Achievement Banquet was held Sunday, September 30, at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Coleman. 4-H*ers from all over Coleman County came to receive awards for their accomplishments of the past year. The theme was 4-H Centennial * 100 Years, as 4-H celebrates its centennial year. The first 4-H Clubs began in 1907 in Jack County, with the *Corn Club* for boys. In 1910, that was followed by the first *Pig Club* and *Beef Calf Clubs*, right here in Coleman County. In 1912, the girls were added with the Tomato Clubs in Milam County. 4-H has undergone many changes through the 100 years of its existence, and now, there are more than one million youth in 4-H in the United States and internationally.

Guest speaker for the banquet was Eric Schwertner, a junior at Miles High School, and a member of the Miles 4-H Club and District 7 4-H Council Information Officer. Eric told his 4-H story and related how 4-H had helped him to set and achieve goals, and to do his best. He has learned leadership and public speaking skills. Eric encouraged 4-H members to take advantage of the wonderful opportunities that 4-H has to offer.

Each year, 4-H members are presented Certificates of Achievement for projects they have participated in during the previous year. They are also recognized for advancing to District and State Competitions. Certificates of recognition are also given to adult leaders who have been project leaders and volunteers.

Silver Star, I Dare You, and Gold Star Awards are awarded to 4-H members who qualify and who apply for these awards, each having completed a 4-H Record Book.

Silver Star Awards, the highest award that can be presented to a Junior or Intermediate age 4-H*er, were awarded to James Short and Sarah Casselberry.

The highest award that can be achieved by a senior 4-H member, the Gold Star Award, was presented to Rebecca Baker and Casie Swening.

*I Dare You* Awards, recognizing character and leadership, were given to Nicole Heath and Sarah Hailey. These awards were selected by a judging panel of County Extension Agents from a nearby county, based on their applications and 4-H Record books.

Members of the Coleman 4-H Council annually choose recipients of the *Friend of 4-H* Award and the Outstanding Adult Leaders Awards.

This year, the *Friend of 4-H* Award was given to Coleman County Electric Cooperative and Texas Parks and Wildlife Coleman County Game Wardens, William Heath and Randall Brown.

Get the Facts on Fats
Better Living for Texans Program Tuesday

Better Living for Texans

Have you looked at a Nutrition Facts Food Label lately? What is important about the label? What do you need to know about fats: saturated fats and trans fats? If you want to know more about Fat and Food Labels, then Texas Cooperative Extension has a program for you.

Debbie Hailey, County Extension agent, will present a Better Living for Texans program on Tuesday, October 23, at 1:00 p.m. at the Coleman Housing Authority High Rise Community Room. We will look at food labels and how to read them. We will also explore the facts about fat in our diet. Some fats are beneficial to your health while other fats are harmful. Saturated fat and trans fat raise blood cholesterol, which is a risk factor for heart disease. Limit the amount of these fats you eat.

You can use the Nutrition Facts label to compare different brands of foods. If you get in the habit of comparing brands and choosing the brands with less saturated fat and trans fat, you can reduce your risk of high cholesterol and heart disease.

Join us for this informational program. For more information, call Debbie Hailey at the County Extension Office at 325-625-4519.

Educational programs of Texas Cooperative Extension are open to all people without regard to race, color, sex, disability, religion, age or national origin. The Texas A&M University System, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the County Commissioners courts of Texas Cooperating.

I hadn't noticed them yet... Thanks for sharing Mrs. Smith!

SAM Helmet Left Side Friday Night Lights SAM Helmet Right Side

The Santa Anna Mountaineers took on the Blanket Tigers Friday night at Mountaineer Stadium but the Tigers came to town and they were ready to play. The Tigers came out strong and stayed up with the Mountaineers who led the game 34 to 28 at the half. It looked like it would be one of those games of whoever scored last. The Mountaineers fell behind in the second half and despite a fourth quarter rally by the Mountaineers the Tigers won the game 56-54.

The Mountaineers will have a bye next week and just might need it in order to prepare for the rest of the season and what appears to be must a win all games to make it to the playoffs.

I will get the game photos up a little later this week.

NRCS Texas Accepts Applications for EQIP Funding

Submitted By: David L. Dunlap CEA-Ag/NR

Temple, Texas – Texas agricultural landowners interested in participating in the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) need to apply by Nov. 16, 2007, if they have not already done so to be eligible for the next round of funding, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

“Although EQIP is a continuous sign-up program, some producers may not have signed up yet,” said Don Gohmert, NRCS state conservationist for Texas. “We will rank all eligible applications received by the end of the ranking period on Nov. 16 for 2008 funding. There is a strong possibility that EQIP funds will become available in October.”

EQIP promotes agricultural production and environmental quality. Through EQIP, farmers and ranchers receive financial and technical assistance to help install conservation practices and to implement management systems that promote conservation. Financial assistance is on a cost-shared basis with the producer. The technical assistance is provided at 100 percent of the cost by NRCS. According to Gohmert, there are a few changes in EQIP for 2008.

NRCS is adding another statewide resource concern to the program at the recommendation of the State Technical Committee. Funding will be provided in 2008 specifically for conservation practices that improve habitat for the pronghorn antelope in west Texas.

Also new in 2008 will be a process to streamline payments. Instead of the traditional percentage-of-cost rates, NRCS will offer flat-rate payments based on a schedule for each conservation practice.

“Landowners will know up-front what the payment in dollars will be,” Gohmert said.

“One important component of EQIP that remains the same is the input needed from the local level to make EQIP address the most pressing resource concerns there,” Gohmert said. “Our local offices may be holding program development group and local working group meetings very soon to gather that input.” NRCS offices and local soil and water conservation district officials will have more information about local meetings.

To sign up for EQIP or to get more information, contact the NRCS office serving your county. Look in the phone book under “U.S. Government, Department of Agriculture,” or find your service center on the Web at http://offices.sc.egov.usda.gov/locator/app.

You can also get information about Texas NRCS conservation technical assistance and programs at www.tx.nrcs.usda.gov.
