The Risk is Real - Serving our Country
Remembering those that have served and those that are serving our country.
You know sometimes it doesn't hit you until it is personal.
Please remember these Santa Anna folks that are serving our country in military combat, training, or support: Maricela (Marty) Siller, Clay Stewardson, Eddie Dawson, Ike Garza, James Watson, Austin Voss, Randy Casey, Mike Montgomery II, Mark Rutherford, Allen Tucker, James Culpepper, Shane Watson, Brandon Beloat, Glen Donham, and Jeffrey Watson.
Pray for our country, its' leaders, and our soldiers and sailors.
Many service men and women return home safely. Operation Tribute to Freedom Homecoming Photographs.
Friday Ramblings
Well it has been a strange week with the crazy weather and all. We had a little shower but my Coleman County Telephone Coop rain gauge is laying on the ground in the back yard. The little plastic piece that holds it to the fence broke a while back and I never got around to rigging it up. I don't think we got very much rain, but at least it kept me from having to mow the grass, rake leaves, or pickup pecans and tree limbs. Jayden, Dawson, and I did pick up a few pecans out in the front yard on Wednesday evening before it got too dark.
Speaking of getting dark, the time will change this Sunday back to Standard Time. I really don't like this time of year when I leave for and get home from work in the dark.
The time will change of course, "just in time" for Halloween on Monday night. While looking around the Web for some information on Daylight Saving Time I ran across some interesting facts on the WebExhibits.org Daylight Saving Time pages
Like a few of you, I spent a couple of late nights this week watching the Houston Astros get thumped by the Chicago White Sox in the World Series. With Tuesday night's Game Three going 14 innings I couldn't last it. I am not real sure I stayed awake for all of Game Four either. I did get to watch the Astros' Game Four starting pitcher Brandon Backe throw seven innings of really nice pitching. The Astros still couldn't seem to pull out even one game. Oh well those few games were the closest I came to watching any baseball this year.
Tuesday night we got to watch the Lady Mountaineer's last volleyball game of the year. It was Parent's Night and us old folks got to go out on the court to be recognized with our daughters. It was a nice feeling. It is a nice feeling to know that the season is over too. The Lady Mountaineers started six seniors this year but they struggled to a 1-9 district record in a tough volleyball district. The Ladies looked pretty tough in pre season but just couldn't get the ball to stay up in District play. They lost their spirit somewhere along the way also. I am not sure how, why, or even if it matters much. I just want to say that I enjoyed watching them play and the opportunity to take some pictures of them.
I don't think I will be taking as many basketball pictures as I have before. I am nearly out of space on my web site and can't afford to go to the next level. I may have to do a little cleanup on the archives and weed out or redo some of the early photos and albums when I was taking huge pictures.
I need to work a little more on the local news and try to get some more business features done too. Maybe with the longer nights I will have some more time to get all that done. Besides I am hopefully going to need some room for all the playoff games the Mountaineers are fixing to be in.
This being the last home game for the Mountaineers it will be Parent's Night for football players, cheerleaders, and their parents beginning a little before seven.
This will be your last chance to get one of those great Mountaineer football programs that Janice Fellers has been making. What a good job that Janice has done with them. She even made some nice programs for the volleyball games this year.
One last thing on last week's cheesaholic confession of mine. It appears that I am not alone. Mike Hartman tells me to, "Try a mixture of American and a good quality pepper-jack (Sargento is great) for a grilled cheese that will knock your socks off." and "I have often joked with my family that I should open a grilled cheese shop and sell nothing but grilled cheeses and drinks with the pepperjack version being the house specialty. If we lived in New York or LA where I could charge $20 a plate for each "designer" sandwich we could make a killing! Just think of all the claims we could make about the amount of calcium in each serving("after all, it's something your body needs anyway"). Serve them on some exotic breads and double the price, not to mention the totally organic and vegetarian versions. What do you say, ready to become partners on top of the grilled cheese kingdom?"
Mike has really put a lot of thought in this and even come up with some names... MORE BUTTER THE BETTER, GREASY CHEESY'S, UDDERLY CHEESY, or SAY CHEESE. Kind of corny don't you think? Maybe we should sell corn dogs too!
That's about it. Have good Friday and we will see you at the game!
Mountaineer Football Playoff T-shirts
The Mountaineer Booster Club will be selling Mountaineer Football playoff T-shirts ($10 plus $1.50 for 2,3,4X) and sweat shirts ($14 plus $1.50 for 2,3,4X). These will be a black 50/50 shirt, with design on front and roster on back. A design proof will be available at the Friday 10/28 Richland Springs game. Orders will be taken until 10/31 5pm. Someone will be available at the game or you can contact Peggy Hensley, Tony Watson, Amanda Ellerbe or Janice Fellers.
Brrr!
The weather sure can change in a hurry around here. At least it's not a hurricane. Saturday was such a beautiful day followed by Sunday's biting winds and overcast skies, and then 30's on Monday morning to another nice Fall day on Monday afternoon.
It's time to get that jacket and coat out of the closet, put the extra quilt at the foot of the bed, and dust off the old space heater.
Don't forget about the antifreeze in the car while it is still fairly decent weather... have you ever tried to drain ice cold water out of a radiator? It's not much fun but I am guilty as anybody else.
How about those plants and pets?
Mountaineer Marching Band
I heard that the Santa Anna High School Marching Band got a two in Saturday's Marching Contest held in Brady. The band has been improving each week both on and off the field and it has been nice to watch them marching again. Thanks to Peggy Hensley for sharing this photo of the Mountaineer Band at contest.

Lady Mountaineer Volleyball
The Lady Mountaineers lost a great, near comeback, game against the Miles Lady Bulldogs in District volleyball action Saturday in Miles. The Lady Mountaineers have been struggling for a win as they come to the close of volleyball season. The Ladies will take on Sterling City at Perry Gym Tuesday for the final game of the season. Since it is the last home game of the year also it will be parents night.
