Remembering those that have served and those that are serving our country.

You know sometimes it doesn't hit you until it is personal.

January 1st, 2005 was the date of the official send off ceremonies for the 56 Brigade Combat Team of 36th Infantry Division of the Texas Army National Guard held in Waco at Baylor University's Floyd Casey Stadium and December 10th will be the official Re Deployment Ceremonies welcoming them back at the same location. See the official 56 Brigade Combat Team site for the latest news and photos.

Please remember these Santa Anna folks that are serving our country in military combat, training, or support: Maricela (Marty) Siller, Clay Stewardson, Eddie Dawson, Ike Garza, James Watson, Austin Voss, Randy Casey, Mike Montgomery II, Mark Rutherford, Allen Tucker, James Culpepper, Shane Watson, Brandon Beloat, Glen Donham, and Jeffrey Watson.

Pray for our country, its' leaders, and our soldiers and sailors.

Many service men and women return home safely. Operation Tribute to Freedom Homecoming Photographs.

Friday

I am afraid I don't have much for your Friday news. I heard the Mountaineers lost to Goldthwaite in Thursday's round one of the Deleon Tournament and will face the boys from Priddy in round two Friday. The Lady Mountaineers also lost in round one to Bangs but I did not catch who they play next or the scores.

I played around a little Thursday night and added a couple of new cartoon feeds to the Funnies and Inspirational pages. The funnies feeds are updated daily and the inspirational cartoons are updated weekly. I haven't been getting very much funny stuff from my sources.. at least that is suitable for all. The Gibbleguts may be a little risky too but I will try to watch it. I also found and added a Horoscope feed for your entertainment.

Have a good Friday, thanks for coming by SantaAnnaNews.com, and come back soon!

Tuesday's Mountaineer Basketball Action

In Tuesday night's basketball action in Perry Gym the JV Girls took on the team from Brownwood State School and won. I am sorry but I am not sure of the score.

The Lady Mountaineers took on the Mullin Lady Bulldogs and won I think by a score of 60-27. Coach Kerr was a little too fast clearing the scoreboard for me!

The Mountaineers came out on top of the Mullin Bulldogs as with a final score of 53-11.

Guy Allen

The headline reads "Less Than 2 Bucks" in a November 21st ESPN ProRodeo article by Ann Bleiker.

That is what Santa Anna's own 18 time World Champion Steer Roper, Guy Allen, missed winning his 19th Championship to Scott Snedecor of Uvalde Texas at the National Finals held November 18-20th in Amarillo Texas. Guy entered the contest in first place, $16,148 ahead of Snedecor, but Snedecor was hot and finished $1.67 ahead of Allen with the closest Finals in PRCA history.

Congratulations to Guy on another outstanding year of steer roping!

Happy Thanksgiving

I hope that you and your families had a Happy Thanksgiving!

We had a great Thanksgiving with some 20 or so at our house for turkey and such.

Thursday was my birthday and I got a little wiser... ok, and older too I guess!

Friday I was wanting to go watch Throckmorton play Trinidad in Glen Rose or Coleman play Childress in Sweetwater but I got sicker than sick! I guess I had the stomach bug that is going around. Let me tell you that I never in my 39 years, OK, 42, I am getting forgetful too you know.. never have I been so sick. I was so sick that I didn't even turn the TV on for the whole day and I still have not recovered completely.

Cindy tells me that Throckmorton beat the tar out of the team from Trinidad. Throckmorton was picked to win by 1 point and ended up 45'ing Trinidad so I guess it wasn't much of a game anyhow. She told me the Bluecats bowed out too. I had hoped to at least listen to my Uncle Phil's broadcast but I just didn't feel like it much. Congratulations to the Bluecats and first year Bluecat Head Coach Rusty Buzzard on their successful year.

I did hear of another high school football coach and Santa Anna Ex who's team is doing well in this year's playoffs. Dick Smith is the defensive coordinator for Wimberley which is known for its defense. Dick came up with the name Code Red for the defensive squad. Wimblerly is currently ranked fifth in the state for 3A and will play in the Div 1 3A state semi-finals next week against West Orange Stark. There is a good Austin American-Statesman article about their win over Hondo last Friday night. Keep up the good work Dick.. Santa Anna is proud of you!

Speaking of coaches, I wonder whatever happened to Buddy Hardin? Dianne Wetsel e-mailed me a couple of weeks ago and had read about them in the Abilene paper and saw them on TV. I haven't had much time to look into it and didn't come up with much other than a couple of Abilene Reporter News articles. You all will have to help me out a little on this one. I think that Buddy graduated in 1990. He lead the Hawley Bearcats to the playoffs this year for the first time in school history. They played Bangs at Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood a couple of weeks ago and lost 57-6.

Update - Buddy Hardin

Sandra Guthrie shared some new information about Buddy.. isn't it great to be from a small town where your school teachers keep up with and care about you many years later! Mrs. Guthrie and Mrs. Wetsel both taught Buddy, I believe, and Mrs. Guthrie added this: "After graduating from Tarleton State University, Buddy coached/taught Spanish at Granbury for several years, then a couple of years of coaching/Spanish at Teague. Then he went last summer [I think] to Hawley. He's married [Tonya] and has one son, Wilson."

Thanks for the update and we wish Buddy the best of luck in Hawley. I knew some Smiths from Hawley back in the late 70's and early 80's. I spent the weekend break with one of them when we both worked at Scout camp at Camp Tonkawa near Buffalo Gap. He lived out in the country and we put a transmission in his old pick-up truck so we could go into Hawley and watch a girl's softball game. We had a lot of fun the best I remember.

Lady Mountaineer Basketball

At Friday's pep rally Coach Libby said the Lady Mountaineers were playing for third place in the Priddy Basketball Tournament against Meridian on Saturday afternoon I think. I am not sure how they did. I also heard at work from some of my Lohn friends that they beat a Santa Anna Varsity/JV Girls team by four points on Monday night.

If you have any game results you would like to share please send them to news@santaannanews.com.

Thanks to Peggy Hensley for sharing these photos over the weekend from the Priddy Tournament. I thought for some reason they were playing for third but Peggy says they placed second... way to go Lady Mountaineers.
