Not really news..

Believe it or not there are quite few nights when I sit down to try and start on the news and have no idea what I am going to write about or come up with and well this is one of those nights. I am still amazed at the number of you that rely on SantaAnnaNews.com and me for doing it. As the numbers grow closer to and will probably reach 30,000 this week I just want to say how much I appreciate your support and the kind words that many of you have shared. Your words are what fuels me each day.

Tonight is one of those nights when there is not much happening and I am just waiting for the next game. The Mountaineers are coming off the biggest and best game of the year and are still facing the biggest game yet. I was really excited about last weeks game photos when I saw them. I thought they were some of the best I have done this year despite some user error at the first with my camera set for manual focus instead of auto focus, several of the first ones were not in focus. Of course player movement, lighting, and my movement are always factors! The good thing about it is none of them are edited any except for auto-resizing by my J-Album photo album software. So I can always zoom in more or crop to fit a zoom when printing them out. And I always have to take a lot to get a few good ones... I took over four hundred at the game. Check them all out on the Sports Page

The Cowboys had a very lucky night on Monday Night Football and came from two touchdowns behind in the fourth quarter to beat the T. O. - less Philadelphia Eagles. All I can say about T. O. is good riddance!

Basketball season has started for the Jr. High and Lady Mountaineers but I am not sure about the scores. I would be happy to post any photos, stats, scores, or summaries if anyone cares to share. Send yours to news@santaannanews.com.

The Country Music Awards was last night... but I didn't get to watch them because we don't get CBS thanks to KTAB.. but that is another story. I guess I will have to wait for the reruns on CMT.

I did finish one little project that I have been wanting to do. I created what is known as a "favicon". A little 16x16 pixel icon that is saved with a Favorite when you add a new Favorite's link. Then is displayed in the Favorite's list, in the address line of your Internet browser, or on your Desktop if you save it there. Not really functional I guess but just one of those neat little things you can do if you have your own web page. See these sites for more information about favicons:
Favicon.com
Chami.com
HTMLGoodies.com

My favicon looks like this

To make it show up in your Favorites and when you are viewing the SantaAnnaNews.com site click the icon or just add it to your Favorites

You can also send it to your Desktop as a shortcut by choosing File, Send, and then Shortcut to Desktop and it will put a 32x32 pixel shortcut icon on your Desktop.

Not really news.. Part II

I still don't have much to talk about.. tonite, Thursday night, Cindy, Jessica, Nate, Jennifer, and the boys all met me in Brownwood and we went to McDonalds, played on the McPlayground, and then went to see the Brownwood High School Drama Department's Fall Play - James and the Giant Peach. It was a really delightful children's play, but my Grandson, Dawson, got anxious when the Aunts mistreated James, and when a masked character appeared he was ready to go home!

Normally he is not scared of anything. One of his favorite things to do is play hide and seek in the dark and be scared by me or Aunt Jessica.

Anyhow, back to the performance, they did a really great job. The costumes and scenery were outstanding and colorful. The whole thing was very entertaining for the 3/4 full house. BHS Drama Department head, Larry Mathis, and his students did a nice job of adapting a One Act Play and the book into a really cute play. The next performance will be Saturday at 7PM I think. Go a little early as we nearly missed the start. It is in the Brownwood High School Auditorium where the last several One Act Play contests have been in recent years. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for students, and preschool children are free. It may be a little scary in spots for little ones though.

Had I known they were allowing no flash photos I would have taken my camera and got some for you.

I think we will be going to the Richland Springs vs Rule Six Man football game at Gordon Wood Stadium Saturday night maybe.

Speaking of football, THE GAME will be played Friday in Clyde at 7:30. I hope to make it to the pep rally since I haven't been to one this year. Santa Anna Mountaineers vs the number three team in the state, the Throckmorton Greyhounds. Bring it to Clyde and we will see ya at the game. Don't forget to make some noise!

Oh, thanks for coming by and have a good Friday!
James

What is all the commotion?

Why is the helicopter landing at the football field? Is someone hurt? Maybe a football player at practice.. or a junior high basketball player at Monday night's games..

No it is just the Santa Anna Volunteer Fire Department practicing for such an emergency with the Air Evac Lifeteam from Brownwood Regional Hospital. Hopefully they will never have to use it but now they have some practice and proceedures in place for landing the helicopter at the field, getting the GPS coordinates, and using the lights on the field at night.

I, for one, have always appreciated these guys and gals on the Fire Department for taking the time for meetings and practice and just want to take this opportunity to say thanks for all they do.

Santa Anna Mountaineers - 2005 Region IV Bi-District Champs

The lights shone bright on the Santa Anna Mountaineers in Rising Star Friday night as they took on the District Twelve Champion Blanket Tigers in the Region IV Bi-District playoff game. The Mountaineers were picked to lose by two and when they missed an early extra points kick in the first quarter I thought that it might haunt them. Haunt them it did for most of the game but the Mountaineers held on to win by a score of 70-62.

The win marked the first ever for the Mountaineers in the playoffs as a six man team. The Mountaineers played their best game of the year with outstanding performances from Ben McIver as he had a part in four touchdowns and over 360 yards of offense and Patrick Kerr as he scored five touchdowns, one of just about every kind of touchdown you can imagine.. three pass receptions, a pass interception return , and an onside kick return.

The teams both played a clean game with no penalties in the first half and one of the best jobs of officiating I have seen this year.

The Mountaineers will take on number two ranked Throckmorton as they come off their 80-50 Bi-District win over Aspermont. I believe the game is set for this Friday at 7:30 in Clyde.

I will try to get the photos up later this week as I have time.

Texas Cooperative Extension, The Texas A&M University System

Feeding Your Family Without Starving Your Wallet

by Dr. Jenna Anding, Associate Professor and Extension Nutrition Specialist

With prices rising on everything we purchase, it can be difficult to make our food dollars stretch enough to feed our families.

It seems that everyone is trying to save money by reducing food costs. Being a thrifty shopper takes some skill, but there are ways that consumers can lower their food costs. Dr. Jenna Anding, Associate Professor and Extension Nutrition Specialist for Texas Cooperative Extension, gives these suggestions for how to:

Save Food Dollars With Smart Shopping Skills.

1. Keep a "short list" - a list of items that you need to buy (a notepad attached to the refrigerator with a magnet works great). When you run out of something, write it down as soon as possible.

2. Study the store's sale advertisements.

3. Look at the foods you already have on hand. Use these foods, along with store specials, to plan your meals and snacks.

4. After you plan your meals and snacks, make a shopping list. Be sure to include the items you listed on your short list.

5. Check your coupons to see if any can be used with the items that you have on your shopping list.

6. Make a list of non-food items (soap, laundry, personal care items). Can you buy these from a discount store? Do you have coupons for any of these items?

7. When shopping, consider store brands over national brands to save money. Even with coupons, some store brands may be cheaper.

8. Think twice about convenience foods. Pancake and cake mixes, along with canned soups, fruits, and vegetables, can help you save time and money. Other foods like frozen dinners and coating mixes for meat and poultry may not save you enough time to justify the cost.

9. Check out bakery thrift stores for great buys on bread. Save money on fruits and vegetables by shopping at farmers markets.

10. If possible, shop alone, when you are not hungry, and when store is not crowded. This helps you to get in and out of the store in the shortest amount of times.

11. Store food properly to maintain quality and to avoid spoilage.

For more practical information about these suggestions and other ways to reduce food costs when grocery shopping, come to the November Better Living for Texans class entitled "Feeding Your Family without Starving Your Wallet." The class will be Thursday, November 10. at Loaves & Fishes in Coleman, at the corner of Pecan and Nueces, at 6:00 p.m. The program is FREE of charge, and everyone is welcome. Debbie Hailey, County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences, will demonstrate how to adopt cost-cutting practices to reduce food costs. If you have any questions, call Debbie at 325-625-4519.
