Vacation Bible School A Success!
Dawson Rambo (pictured below), of Santa Anna, is wearing his hat made by a clown as he awaits his turn in a game played at the Vacation Bible School hosted by the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Santa Anna.
The theme of the program is "Castles & Crowns", so people dressed in medieval costumes can be seen throughout the evening.
The children's activities include arts and crafts, theater, games, story time, singing and a snack. Prizes are awarded nightly in a drawing.
According to Pastor Jerry Chastain, "The program has been wonderful, with many children attending. We are enjoying seeing the kids have such a fun time while learning about Christ." The program is being held every evening this week, Monday through Friday, from 6:45 till 9:00, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church located at 142 CR 106 in Santa Anna.
This Saturday morning from 11:00 till 12:00 a special program will be given involving the children that attended during the week. Also at that time two bicycles will be given away at a drawing.
It is not too late for any child age 5 - 12 to begin attending. Registration is still open. For more information call Pastor Jerry Chastain at (325) 348-6025.
Brady's World Championship BBQ Goat Cook-Off
Greetings from Brady, Texas! Our 35th Annual World Championship BBQ Goat Cook-Off is just around the corner and we are still accepting applications for vendors in the Arts & Crafts Fair. We are always looking for new and talented people to share their craft with our attendees and would certainly love to have them join us this year. See below for more information.
In addition to the cook-off and the arts and crafts fair, we will have a 5K fun run, plenty of children's games, a 4-H rodeo, and live Texas music featuring Kevin Seale, Radney Foster and Brandon Rhyder.
Calling Arts & Crafts Vendors
Plans for the 35th Annual World Championship Barbeque Goat Cook-Off and Arts & Crafts Fair are underway in Brady, Texas. The Brady/McCulloch County Chamber of Commerce would like to invite all vendors to be a part of the 35th Anniversary of the event on Labor Day weekend. The fair is Saturday, August 30th from 9 am to 5 PM.
Limited booth space remains and the entry fee is $100 per booth. The booth spaces are 10’ x 10’ in the open-air or 8’ x 10’ under a covered pavilion. There is a $5.00 fee for electricity if needed and access to it is limited. Entries are handled on a first come first served basis with an entry deadline of August 15th, 2008.
This is a great fair due to its built-in audience with 150 cooking teams at the cook-off and the family, friends and fans who come with them from far and wide. The fair also draws a great crowd because of its reputation with an estimated attendance of 6,000 throughout the day.
About the World Championship BBQ Goat Cook-Off: What began in 1973 as a small fundraiser for the local Jaycees with 16 cooking teams, Brady’s Goat Cook-Off is the longest running of its kind in Texas with 150 team entries each year. There are approximately 20,000 goats in McCulloch County and it ranks among the top 20 counties in the nation for goat production. Goats are a $2 million industry in our area.
For more information or to obtain an entry form, please contact the Brady/McCulloch County Chamber of Commerce at 325-597-3491 or chamber@bradytx.us.
Santa Anna Reading Club
Submitted by Tex Wright:
Each year the Texas State Library recommends a theme for the years reading program in libraries across the state. The theme this year was history.
The Santa Anna library board members and other volunteers then chose a theme for their program, tying it to the state recommendations. History being the state theme, the Santa Anna Library chose the Santa Anna Library as the base of their program. The Santa Anna Library is 101 years old, started in 1907 with a few books on a shelf in a doctor’s office.
The boys and girls spent the month of July (every Thursday) in time travel. They saw, through pictures, stories, and actual games, the years pass by and watched Santa Anna and its library grow and progress with the rest of the world. They saw clothes from the flapper era, the depression era, the 50’s, and on to the present. They played with jacks, rolled hoops, yoyos, tops, paper dolls and other toys that represented the past years of childhood. Also presented were forms of transportation and homes.
The first week (the first twenty years) the boys and girls tried washing with a tub and rub board. Then found that the dryer was line strung between two poles and the wash held in place with wooden clothes pins.
They read books like McGuffeys Reader, Peter Rabbit, and the Wright Bros. Story.
The second week brought the 20’s into view with a full dressed flapper girl, the model “T”, Raggedy Ann dolls, china and paper dolls. This period of time also brought the depression era.
Noted were the home made toys like kites, paper dolls and other hand crafted toys.
The 50’s era were represented with girls in a poodle skirt with many petticoats and rolled up cuffs for the guys. Toys from that era were Hula Hoops, Frisbees, stick horses, and other toys that were popular in this era.
The last location was celebrated with a big party. In this era the computer had become a necessity to the new generation and a way of life for all. The boys and girls, adult and junior leaders and guests made a trip to the Santa Anna Computer lab which is part of the library system. Mr. Wright explained the advantages of the lab while they were there. Returning to the library, the boys and girls made toy airplanes, tops, yoyos, and recycled milk jugs into decorated watering cans. Every boy and girl attending on the last day received a book to take home, a certificate for a pretzel from Huddle Arcade of Coleman, and a certificate for an ice cream from the Santa Anna Dairy Queen.
On the last day of the 2008 program, prizes were awarded to all according to their age group and the books read during the month.
Special prizes were awarded by a drawing. These prizes were two oysters brought from Hawaii and donated for this purpose. The young ladies whose names were drawn were Madison Wise and Sudie Puckett. Each of these young ladies were photographed holding the pearls taken from the oysters.
Total readers enrolled for the program were 42 boys and girls. A special thanks to the 5 boys and girls who served as junior leaders, helping with games, registration, checking in and out of the books and other needs and to the 10 adult volunteers who planned and supervised the program this year.
We cannot leave out the very important work done by our librarians, Ovella Williams and Yvonne Holman. We sure do appreciate the work you do and the help you give.

And the Look at Coleman County Last 150 Years Moves On
Next Stop Burkett, Texas
News from the Coleman County Historical Commission...Submitted by Tex Wright:
At our last program held in Trickham, Texas, some 50 people heard Felton Martin tell the story and stories about Trickham, the Cheatham store, the tombs in the middle of the street, and other things of interest about this original Coleman County town.
We learned that settlers had settled in the area and started ranching and farming in the 1840’s. Records show that when Camp Colorado was placed on the Colorado River, they purchased their hay and grain from farmers and ranchers already settled in the area. W
e had many descendents of area settlers, two of them descending from Cheatham of the original store, attending, asking questions, and telling stories that they had heard.
Thanks Felton for an excellent program.
Our next program, Aug. 7, 2008, will be held in Burkett. Sue Frizzell will present the program in the Burkett Community Center.
Directions to get you to the Community Center:
Coming from Coleman - Hwy 206 to Burkett, come into town across the old bridge (remember its one lane traffic) into town to Post Office turn right between the Burkett Fire Dept. and the Burkett Post Office. Community Center is on the left second place down. Just look for a lot of cars. (It’s the old Methodist Church)
Refreshments will be ready about 6:30PM and the program will start about 7:00 PM.
Linda Brady will give a short history of the community of Burkett. Then "Dad" Bloodworth and Grady Harris, both ‘old timers’ in the area will give a rundown on events and happenings of Burkett past. Roy Dean Young, another of the ‘old timers’ will tell some of the area history. He was a student in the Live Oak school near Webville. He will probably mention the old wooden bridge that had to be crossed to get to Webb’s Store. Remember, all this takes place on Thursday, Aug. 7th, starting about 6:30PM at the Burkett Burkett Community Center.
