Funtier Days

I saw in the Coleman paper where the Bison Cookoff and Funtier Days is this weekend.

There were a lot of cookoff rules but I didn't see a schedule anywhere.

For a look back at last year's Funtier Days' fun see the Special 2005 Funtier Day Photo Album with over 250 photos I took.

Texas Highways magazine was also here last year for the fun filled weekend and they had a nice Just Passing Through article and photos on Santa Anna’s World Championship Bison Cookoff in this month's Texas Highways Magazine. There were a few more photos in the print edition than on the web.

See ya there!

ABBOTT SHUTS DOWN DALLAS-BASED BIOPERFORMANCE FOR PEDDLING FAKE FUEL PILLS IN PYRAMID SCHEME

Claims of increased gas mileage to save consumers money called bogus

AUSTIN - Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott today filed a lawsuit and obtained a temporary restraining order and asset freeze against Texas-based BioPerformance Inc. The company, organized as an illegal pyramid scheme, markets a fuel pill it falsely claims will boost gas mileage and save consumers money.

BioPerformance Inc., president and owner Lowell Mims and co-owner Gustavo Romero of Irving advertise nationally via the Internet and through seminars around Texas and other states, exploiting the climate of today’s high fuel prices. The company’s ads claim the gasoline pills and powders they offer have a non-toxic “top secret gas pill” that can increase fuel efficiency by 30 percent or more and cut harmful emissions by up to 50 percent. In fact, the additive is basically the chemical equivalent of mothballs, which are toxic.

“BioPerformance claims its top-secret gas pills can save consumers big bucks at the gas pump,” said Attorney General Abbott. “These claims are bogus; the pill does absolutely nothing to improve gas mileage. The company is merely a smokescreen to trigger the recruitment of more and more paying members into what appears to be an illegal pyramid scheme.”

Scientists who tested the product at the University of Texas at Austin and at a Florida university concluded that the pills are mainly naphthalene, the chemical found in mothballs. The Attorney General’s laboratory expert actually concluded BioPerformance’s product could decrease engine performance.

Legitimate multi-level marketing businesses pay commissions based on the sale of goods and services, while illegal pyramids, which the Attorney General alleges BioPerformance is, pay commissions based mainly on the recruitment of people to the organization.

Consumers are encouraged to become “dealers” at the various dazzling seminars BioPerformance sponsors around the country, at start-up costs of between $300 to over $500. Members can participate at various levels of “business volume” sales, but ultimately the plan functions on the basis of how many others a member can recruit to become dealers, which is by definition a pyramid scheme. On its Web site the company boasts almost 4,500 Texas members with $25 million in sales since December.

The Attorney General’s lawsuit alleges violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act and the promotion of an illegal pyramid scheme, which can result in penalties of $20,000 per violation. The suit requests restitution to consumers who have been financially harmed by the false promises of this operation. These false income promotions include slick Web site come-ons for new sports cars, mansions and exclusive vacations “just for helping Americans save money on gas.”

The Attorney General’s scientific expert also found that the chemical compound used in these pills can be harmful to humans. Short-term exposure to naphthalene by humans via inhalation, ingestion or skin contact can result in anemia and neurological or liver damage.

Consumers who encounter a business that is making false claims or appears to be operating as a pyramid scheme may file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at (800) 252-8011 or file a complaint online at www.oag.state.tx.us

Baby Luke is Home!

I got home from work Monday not knowing whether or not my new little grandson Luke would be waiting for me or not.

Luke was born a little early on Easter Sunday April 16th and we knew that he would get to know the great nurses and doctors at the Abilene Regional Medical Center Neonatal/Perinatal ICU before he got to know us very well.

We got to know them pretty well ourselves when our other Grandson, James Dawson, was born a little early a couple of years ago. ARMC's Dr. James Marshall is one of the best and Cindy really likes him a lot so you know he must be good especially with a name like James!

Luke and Dawson

There were several gathered around the house anxiously awaiting the baby and parents arrival and wait they would. Some came and went and some stayed but there were a couple of Grandparents, a couple of Greats, and a couple of Great Greats, and of course Aunts Crystal, Jennifer, and Kindi all waiting.

The Aunts

I had predicted several weeks ago that he would be home by Mother's Day which would have been exactly five weeks, and I may have jinxed it because he came home the day after. It was about thirty minutes short of being a month as they drove up about 11:30. Dr. Marshall had gotten held up by a couple of emergencies before he could get in a final look at our Baby Luke.

Luke and Dawson's "Bubba", Jayden Rambo

But he is home now and everyone is doing great and life will return back to normal... or about as normal as it will ever get.. especially for the new Kerr Family... Patrick, Jessica, and Luke.

Thanks to all of you for your kind words, thoughts, and prayers.

Better Health for Better Choices

Better Living for Texans New program set to help residents make wise food choices
Submitted by Debbie Hailey - Coleman County Extension Agent - Family & Consumer Sciences

Nutrition classes are being offered locally to help residents learn how to plan and serve healthy meals. The classes are based on the recommendations of MyPyramid, which was developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The next class will be held at 1:00, Tuesday, May 16, in the Community Room of the Coleman Housing Authority High Rise. By attending the class, MyPyramid: Better Health with Better Choices, participants will learn how to apply three keys to good health: variety, moderation and physical activity.

"There is no 'perfect' food that will give you all the nutrients you need," said Sharon Francey Robinson, a nutrition specialist with Texas Cooperative Extension. Although many foods are rich sources of certain vitamins and minerals, Robinson said, every food lacks some of those essential nutrients.

"If you eat only a few kinds of foods, you're missing out on some important nutrients that you need to remain healthy," she said. Robinson advises people to eat a variety of choices from all five of the food groups illustrated in MyPyramid. Another important key to eating healthfully is moderation, Robinson said. "When shopping or eating out, select foods and beverages with the least amount of saturated or trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, added sugar or alcohol."

Adults are advised to get at least 30 minutes of moderately intensive physical activity every day. To avoid weight gain, 60 minutes of physical activity every day is recommended. That activity should be in addition to your usual daily activities and can be spread throughout the day and can include enjoyable activities such as a brisk walk and gardening. Pregnant women and people who have a health condition, take medications or are more than 40 years old should ask their doctor about which types of physical activity are right for them.

To learn more about MyPyramid and to get healthy eating tips, contact Debbie Hailey, county Extension agent, at 625-4519, and ask about nutrition education classes available in your community.

Please join us for this informative class Tuesday, May 16, at the High Rise Community Room.
