Spring forward

Don't forget the time change this weekend!

I am sure ready for it... I like it when I can work out in the yard after work during the week.

It officially changes Sunday morning so don't be late for church!

SantaAnnaNews.com Milestone Reached

Well another SantaAnnaNews.com milestone has been reached as it went over 40,000 hits Wednesday.

As I often say it has been a lot of fun and a lot of work too..

It has been through a lot of change over the past couple of years. I like to think that it has been for the better of course and hope that you do too.

I have had to report on some really sad things as I have done this week but there have been some really fun things too.

The best part is hearing from folks that I don't know or ones that I haven't seen in a long time. Some Santa Anna folks, friends, or old classmates like JR Salazar, Jeremy Holbrook, Beth Rhoades Foster, and David Kilcrease, or Shelby Tuttle, or sister's-in-law Karen Wetsel Smith and Vicki Smith Drake. There are many others too and I certainly can't mention them all but I especially want to thank a few... Mike Hartman, Connie Culpepper Massey, and my old buddy Clay Stewardson. There are some others here in town that always have kind words of encouragement like Judy Hartman, Montie and Sandra Guthrie, Eddie and Mary Ann Hartman, Pat Smith, and Rob Cheaney.

I certainly could not and would not have ever been able to do it without my most faithful, my family.. my wife Cindy who helps me do it right, Jessica, Jennifer, and Chrystal, Mom and Tex, Jean, Linda, and now Grandma Robinett

As always.. thanks for coming by SantaAnnaNews.com and come back soon!

Sacred Heart Church - Fish Fry

A Fish Fry will be held Sunday, April 9, 2006 from 11:30 am until 2:30 PM at Sacred Heart Parish Hall. The menu will consist of fresh fried catfish, scalloped potatoes, baked beans, fresh garden salad and peach cobbler for dessert. Your beverage is included all for the price of $6.00 per plate for adults and $3.00 plate for children. Sacred Heart parish welcomes everyone from miles around to come and join us in this fund raiser event.

Coder's Corner

I added a new page to SantaAnnaNews.com this week.

Coder's Corner will feature the inspirational and humorous writings of my Mom's brother and my Uncle Robert (Bob) Coder. It will be like the Funnies and the Inspirational pages put together and similarly updated from time to time as he sends them to me.

My Uncle Robert and his wife Lenora live in Allen, Texas where they are retired. They have done missionary work in Zimbabwe since retiring and Uncle Robert has also written for Baptist organizations and Mature Living magazine.

For example in this week's "Simple Logic" one bit of logic that I thought was so true was "A husband is fine-tuned when he really understands what his wife isn't saying." You will have to check out Coder's Corner. Mom has been telling me how good his writings are for some time and he finally started sending some to me and well.. you will just have to see for yourself.

Rain

We had a little more of the wet stuff early Wednesday morning.. probably another inch or so.

I haven't got my Coleman County Telephone Coop gauge fixed yet and my official rain reporter hasn't checked in yet!

Former Santa Anna ISD Principal and Teacher Killed in Tragic Accident

It is with great sadness that I learned Monday about a former Santa Anna ISD Principal that was killed in an accident on Interstate 30 in Arlington early Saturday morning. Darrell "Mark" Burress, 48, was killed when an intoxicated driver in a Jeep Cherokee struck a police vehicle causing it to hit another and strike Burress and two police officers. One officer was treated and released and the other is in serious condition.

Burress lived with his wife, Susie, in Aledo and they had gone to pickup their daughter and grand daughter from the airport when their vehicle was involved in a minor hit and run near the Ball Park in Arlington. Susie, the daughter, and grand daughter had gone to a nearby restaurant to wait while a tow truck came to remove their Chevrolet Tahoe from the scene when the second accident occurred.

He leaves behind six children ages 8 to 19 and an 11 month old grand daughter.

He was a vice principal and teacher in Santa Anna from 1998 to 2000 before he became a vice principal and later principal at Peaster High School in rural Parker County.

Burress was known for being a cool guy, cutting up with the students, and he often rode his Harley-Davidson motorcycle to school.

"Mr. Burress was my Chemistry teacher. He was a really awesome teacher and friend." wrote Kristen Keeney Donham.

He also was pastor of Abilene Primitive Baptist Church for nine years before leading Primitive Baptist Church Lawn for five years.

Please pray for the Burress Family and friends as they mourn their loss.

Pricklypear Management Seminar - March 30, 2006

By: Lance Rasch, CEA-Agriculture

Texas Cooperative Extension, The Texas A&M University System

A Pricklypear Management Seminar will be held Thursday, March 30, 2006 at the Lake Coleman Volunteer Fire Department building at Lake Coleman. Registration will be at 9:00 am and the program will begin at 9:30 am. Five Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) will be given to pesticide license holders pending TDA approval.

Pricklypear has become an increasing problem in Coleman and surrounding counties. According to Dr. Darrell Ueckert, Professor Emeritus for Rangeland Ecology and Management, pricklypear has many adaptations for survival in arid and semiarid environments and they occupy millions of acres of Texas rangeland used for livestock and wildlife production. Their status as a nuisance versus a valuable plant varies among resource areas and among ranchers. This program is designed to assist landowners with pricklypear management and control options.

The topics to be discussed during the program include:
Pricklypear Control and Herbicide Up-dates - Dr. Allan McGinty, Extension Range Specialist Appreciating Pricklypear for Wildlife - Dr. Dale Rollins, Extension Wildlife Specialist Economics of Prickly Pear Control - Dr. Jason Johnson, Extension Economist Biological Control of Prickly Pear - Dr. Chris Sansone, Extension Entomologist

Following a catered noon meal, Jack Knox and Dr. Joe Pat Hemphill will discuss Controlling Prickly Pear from a Landowners Perspective. A ranch tour will be conducted to evaluate chemical and mechanical prickly pear control methods used on the Knox and Hemphill ranches. The program will conclude around 3:30 PM.

Directions from Coleman: Travel on U.S. Hwy. 283 North approximately 15 miles to FM 1274. Turn West on FM 1274 to Lake Coleman. Follow the signs to the Lake Coleman Volunteer Fire Department building.

The Pricklypear Management Seminar is a multi-county program sponsored by Texas Cooperative Extension and Natural Resource Conservation Service in Coleman, Concho, Runnels, and Callahan Counties. Cost for the program will be $10 if you RSVP to one of the following County Extension Offices by Tuesday, March 28. $15 will be charged at the door. Please call by the deadline so an accurate head count can be made for the meal and refreshments: Coleman County 325-625-4519; Concho County 325-732-4304 ; Runnels County 325-365-2219 or Callahan County 325-854-1518.

All programs and information of Texas Cooperative Extension are available to everyone without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, handicap, or national origin. We will seek to provide reasonable accommodations for all persons with disabilities for this meeting. Serving our Country

I told you all last week of Ruben and Liz Frausto. I have exchanged several e-mails with Ruben and Liz over the week and it has been really nice hearing from this young couple. Liz was kind enough to share some photos with us too.

Liz and Ruben Frausto

If you have been reading SantaAnnaNews.com very long you know how special it is to me to honor those that are serving our country. This time it is a little different than those I have told you about before. Ruben and Liz are expecting a little baby boy in May! Ruben is currently in Kuwait and won't be able to come home for R&R until two weeks after the baby's due date and he is not scheduled to be home permanently until September.

Many of you may know Liz as she is from Coleman and did some student teaching in Sharon Greenlee's 3rd Grade Class three years ago while attending Angelo State. Liz is a teacher at Hugh Bish Elementary in Lawton Oklahoma. Her parents are Simon and Herlinda Martinez of Coleman.

Of course I already told you that Ruben, a 1990 SAHS graduate, is the son of Joe and Magdalena Frausto of Santa Anna and has been serving our country in the US Army since graduating. Ruben and Liz live in Lawton Oklahoma. He is stationed with the 1st Battalion, 77th Field Artillery, 75th BDE, Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Texas Cooperative Extension to Offer Food Protection Management Training Course

Food Safety: it's our business Submitted by Debbie Hailey - Coleman County Extension Agent Family & Consumer Sciences

Eating out has never been more popular. Almost half of the money we spend on food is spent away from home. Each year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that approximately 1 in 4 Americans will get sick from eating contaminated food at home or at food service establishments. This spring in Coleman County, Texas Cooperative Extension is offering training to reduce those numbers of illnesses.

The Food Manager Certification Training Program, called "Food Safety: It's Our Business" seeks to reduce the risk of food borne illness. By taking the course, food service managers can receive the latest information on personal hygiene, how to use thermometers, how to store food safely, how to prepare and serve food properly and how to keep the food preparation areas clean and sanitized. Participants can fulfill requirements for Food Manager Certification if they pass the certification exam offered at the end of the course.

The training session for this area is April 17 & 18, 2006 at Coleman Housing Authority High Rise Community Room. The cost is $ 79.00. Registration deadline is April 3, 2006. For more information, contact Debbie Hailey, County Extension Agent for Family & Consumer Sciences, at 325-625-4519.
