Gov. Perry Orders Flags at Half-Staff In Memory of Former Texas Speaker Bill Clayton

Jan. 09, 2007

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today directed that Texas flags be flown at half-staff in memory of Bill Clayton, former Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives.

“We will lower our flags in remembrance of an influential Texan, who exemplified leadership and true public service as a member and Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives,” Perry said. “Anita and I extend prayers of comfort to Speaker Clayton’s family during their time of grief.”

The governor’s directive applies to the flag of the State of Texas. Texas flags will be lowered immediately to half-staff on the state Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex, and upon all state buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state until sunset on the day of his interment, Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007.

Individuals, businesses, municipalities, counties, and other political subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.

On Dec. 27, Gov. Perry ordered all U.S. and state flags under the control of the state be lowered to half-staff for 30 days in memory of former President of the United States Gerald R. Ford.

Don’t Be Selfish - Second-Hand Smoke Harms Your Loved Ones

Submitted By Debbie Hailey, County Extension Agent-Family & Consumer Sciences

Did you know that if you smoke around others, especially children, you are being selfish? Think about how smoking harms the people you care about. Don’t be selfish.

Secondhand smoke is the smoke that comes off of your cigarette or other tobacco product. This smoke can make you and your children sick - really sick! Did you know that children who live in homes where people smoke get sick more often with coughs, breathing problems such as asthma, and ear infections? Don’t be selfish.

Secondhand smoke is also bad for adults. It can cause lung cancer, and it is also bad for the heart. It can even cause death. If you are a husband who smokes, think about your wife. Your smoking is causing harm to her. Don’t be selfish. Protect your family! Make your home and car smoke-free. Take your smoking outside and away from your loved ones. Poisons from smoke linger in the air for up to seven days. When you smoke inside the house or in your vehicle, you are exposing people to dangerous poisons even if they are not present while you are smoking.

Quitting smoking is not easy, but it can be done. Take your first step by taking your smoke outside and away from your loved ones. By making a smoke-free home and vehicle, you are showing your loved ones that you are not selfish. You are showing them that you care for them. By making a smoke-free home, you are making their health better! For more information on how to quit smoking, contact either the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.gov or 1-800-ACS-2345, or the National Cancer Institute at www.cancer.gov or 1-877-44U-QUIT.

Texas Cooperative Extension and the Texas Cancer Council encourage you to not be selfish. Put your cigarette or cigar out or at least outside! For more information on the harmful effects of secondhand smoke, contact your local County Extension Agent, Debbie Hailey, at 325-625-4519, and inquire about their Put it Outside for Healthier Kids program.

Statement by Gov. Rick Perry on Comptroller Combs' biennial revenue estimate

Jan. 08, 2007

“The Comptroller’s announcement of a historic budget surplus is welcome news that will help ensure Texas can fully fund property tax relief, and pay for priorities like border security and education.

“This surplus should reinforce our commitment to the principles and policies that helped create it. State leaders must continue to be fiscally disciplined, we must continue to set clear but limited priorities, and we must remember that every expenditure affects not only those who receive a government service, but also the taxpayers who pay for it.”

Stock Show

Well I am not sure exactly what happened. I missed the Santa Anna Stock Show. Usually somebody asks me if I am going to be there to take pictures and reminds me.

I should have known by how cold it was on Saturday that it was stock show time. Oh well... maybe somebody else will share some results and pictures.

Did you notice the banner ads for That Santa Anna Store, Cool Creek Outfitters, and Santa Anna Grocery that appeared on Thursday?

I have been a little hesitant about selling advertising on SantaAnnaNews.com but I am going to bring the spirit of giving and Christmas to the News in December. The ads will link to the business's web site if they have one or possibly to a page that I have created, or to more information about the business.

For those with ads that appear over the next few weeks I want to say Merry Christmas! I hope that the advertisements on the News will send you some business. In checking referrals and page counts I hope that you notice increased traffic to your website if you have one and increased business that say they came from the News. I will be implementing a banner advertising program for 2007 that I hope that you will find affordable and profitable to your business and you will choose SantaAnnaNews.com for your online advertising. SantaAnnaNews.com will soon reach 75,000 Front Page hits and I can provide you with supporting traffic documentation if you would like.

So watch for the ads over the next couple of weeks and be sure and tell them that SantaAnnaNews.com sent you!
