County Stock Show this Weekend

Don't forget the County livestock show this weekend...

Some Santa Anna Folks Don't Get Too Far From Home

Santa Anna... to some it means a small town nestled beneath two flat topped mountains in Central Texas. To some it means more and some less.

My Step-Dad, Tex Wright, was born and raised here, joined the Air Force and traveled to Europe for part of the Cold War, and then came back home only to head for the big city. Then my Mom, sisters, and I came along and soon the big city ran us out of town. We were headed home. Home to Santa Anna... home to Grannie's Santa Anna.

It did not take long for Santa Anna to become my home. The place where I was "from". The place where my wife I chose to stay and raise our family. Maybe not the best of everything, but certainly the best of the some things. I don't have a list or anything like that. Everyone has their own reasons for staying, leaving, or coming back I guess.

So far my kids haven't made it too far out of town. Oh sure they all want to get out and never come back but it doesn't take long for them to want to be back.

Lots of folks call Santa Anna home whether they live here still or not.

I happened to notice one such young man, Josh Daniel helping out with the stock show over the weekend. Josh and his dad, Ronnie, both helped herd pigs, goats, and kids during the show. Ronnie and friends also helped cook BarBQ for lunch on Saturday.

I think Ronnie still works for Coleman County Electric Coop. His dad Quinton Daniel worked for Coleman County Telephone Coop for a bunch of years till he retired to farming and ranching here.

Josh was going to school but I am not sure where or if he is out just yet. I have noticed Josh's sister, Candi, at a few basketball and volleyball games too. Candi taught and coached here in Santa Anna for a little while after she got out of college and then she went to Bangs for a while. She married Wesley Dockery, another one of those young people from Santa Anna who hasn't got too far out of town either and also happened to be helping out at the stock show.

It's nice to see these young people stay close to home.

Hmm.. I wonder whatever happened to Josh and Candi's Mom, Suzan?

Some Santa Anna Folks Don't Get Too Far From Home - Part II

Suzan started going to Howard Payne about the same time I did in the late 80's. She was on the fast track to be a teacher and got out in less than 4 years I think, where I am not finished just yet!

I really don't know what all has happened to Suzan over the last 15 years or so, but she e-mailed me a while back from Kentucky and has remarried and is now Suzan McKnight. Some of you may know her as Josh and Candi's Mom, Suzan Daniel, or Suzan Mills from even farther back.

Funny where life takes us sometimes isn't it?

Some Santa Anna Folks Don't Get Too Far From Home - Part III

The News may be a little light. My work has taken me away from home to Las Vegas, Nevada for a couple of days. Not that that is a bad thing I guess. First time I have ever been to Las Vegas. It is a lot different in person than on TV. It is much bigger... maybe not bigger but just more of everything. There is a lot of demolition and construction everywhere. We are staying at Caesar's Palace and it is quite a place by itself. Cindy and I have talked about going to Las Vegas for one of our anniversaries, but I don't think I will ever get her to fly here! Especially after we flew to Florida a couple of years ago.

Mountaineer Basketball versus Bronte

The JV Girls, Varsity Girls, and Varsity Boys all traveled to Bronte last Friday to take on the Longhorns. We did not get to make the trip to Bronte but the JV Girls lost their game 25-31, the Varsity Girls won their game 40-23, and the Varsity Boys lost but I am not sure of the score.

The teams will travel to Robert Lee Tuesday night and I am afraid I won't make it to those games either so if you go and care to share please send me the scores.

Well it was great weather this past weekend for the Santa Anna Livestock Show. The weather will probably get worse about the time for the County Show! It sure was a dust bowl at times when the pigs got to running around but overall it was pretty good show with an excellent turnout.

TEEA To Sponsor Concessions for Stock Show Weekend

Submitted by Coleman County Extension Agent - Debbie Hailey - Family & Consumer Sciences

The Coleman County Texas Extension Education Association (TEEA) will again host the Concession Stand at this year's Coleman's Chapter and County Stock Shows. Good Neighbor and Gouldbusk Club members will serve concessions from breakfast to supper in the Bill Franklin Center at the Coleman Rodeo Grounds throughout the weekend of January 14-16, 2005.

Featured on the menu for Sunday, January 15, will be a Ham Plate Lunch for $5.00. This will include ham, potato salad, cole slaw, beans, bread, and tea or coffee.

Sunday lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All other food items will be available at that time, as well, and throughout the weekend. Delicious Homemade Pie will be for sale, as always, baked by the talented Extension Education Club members.

Everyone is encouraged to join the county in watching the youth exhibit their livestock projects. Then join the Extension Education Clubs in the Bill Franklin Center for great snacks, meals and good company. In the Franklin Center, come by and view the 2nd annual Food Fair. This is a baked goods competition in which 4-H, FFA, and FCCLA members have registered to enter baked foods for competition. Come join the fun!
