UIL District Alignments

Most of you that care already know, but for those that might not care or know, the UIL released the 2006-2008 Official Alignments and Reclassifications Thursday.

Santa Anna will be in a new football district which will be Conference 1A 6-Man Division 1 Region IV District 13 along with Blanket, May, Rising Star, and Valera Panther Creek.

In the playoff picture the District 13 winner will have a first round bye and face the bi-district winner from the two other districts in Region IV which includes Brookesmith, Eden, Richland Springs, Rochelle, and Veribest in District 15 and Buckholts, Clavert, Cherokee, and Lometa in District 16.

In basketball that Mountaineers will fall into Conference 1A - Division 2 Region 2 District 15 along with Brookesmith, Novice, Paint Rock, Valera Panther Creek, and Veribest.

2006 - 2008 should make for some good competition for the Mountaineers.

Tuesday Night Mountaineer Basketball

The Santa Anna Lady Mountaineers played a very exciting game with the Bronte Lady Longhorns Tuesday night in Perry Gym. The Lady Mountaineers defeated the team from Bronte by a score of 31-30 which marks the second one point game in a row for the Ladies.

The boys team didn't fair so well as the Mountaineers played a close game with the Longhorns which was tied 21-21 at tech half, but the Mountaineers couldn't hang on and lost by score of 45-63.

See Sports Page for the game photo albums.

Some, well a few, of the game photos I take usually turn out OK... at least for the web and newspaper. I get a few of the lights or the floor. Most are blurry and out of focus for printing. I figured out a long time ago I have to take a lot just to get those few good ones. Anyhow, I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I do taking them.

New Feature

I guess I was kind of bored Monday night so I added an AP News Page to SantaAnnaNews.com.

The page will contain the day's top Associated Press news stories from around the US and the World all in one handy SantaAnnaNews.com page. I hope you like it... please let me know if you find it useful. It is similar to the Yahoo News section at the bottom left but with more of each story and some thumbnail photos along with links to the full stories.

You can access it from the link in this article or every week from the menu on the left by clicking on AP News.

More Rain..

It rained some more here late Friday and early Saturday morning. I think it was less than an inch. I am still taking part of the credit for the rain though, as the roof is off of my old garage. Just send your rain checks care of James' Garage Roof Fund at the Santa Anna National Bank!

I also had a little dream while it was raining... I dreamed that it was storming and Jessica and I had gone to Fort Worth... not to the Stock Show but the Stock Show was going on while we were there. We were wandering around in the downtown area looking for a place to eat probably and this tornado was coming right at us whipping around the tall buildings... it felt like the Wizard of Oz. About that time I woke up chewing on my arm... I am still on that cannibal diet!

Friday Night Mountaineer Basketball

We didn't get to got to Veribest Friday so I had to rely on the San Angelo Standard Times website for the scores.

Santa Anna Lady Mountaineers 43, Veribest 42 Santa Anna moves to 9-2 in district. The JV score was Santa Anna 33, Veribest 28 and no score was listed for the boys but I think they won also.

Texas Cooperative Extension to Offer Food Manager Certification Training Course

Food Safety: it's our business Submitted by Debbie Hailey - Coleman County Extension Agent Family & Consumer Sciences

Statistics indicate that foodborne illness continues to be a health issue in the United States. Each year, 1 in 4 Americans will become sick, 1 in 1,000 will become hospitalized, and 5,000 will die due to a foodborne illness. During the past legislative session, a statute was amended that allowed the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to require each food establishment to have one certified food manager.

Recently, the Texas Board of Health adopted rules to implement this statute. Many of you have already received a letter from the Texas Department of State Health Services regarding this. Under these new rules, each food establishment permitted by the Texas Department of State Health Services must have one certified food manager. New food manager certificates will be valid for 5 years.

Texas Cooperative Extension, Taylor County, is offering a Food Manager Certification Training Course. This program will be offered for $79 on February 27-28, at the Taylor County Extension Office. Cost includes: training, materials, and the State food manager certification examination. This program is designed to not only prepare foodservice managers to pass the certification examination; it will provide valuable education regarding the safe handling of food. Almost 50 cents of every dollar Americans spend on food is spent on meals prepared away from home. Therefore, careful attention to food safety will help keep customers safe and satisfied.

Foodborne illnesses are estimated to cost thousands of dollars in lost wages, insurance, and medical bills. With these statistics, knowledge of how to prevent foodborne illness is essential. The benefits of improved food safety include:
* Increased customer satisfaction
* Improved relationships with health officials
* Prevention of bad publicity and law suits due to foodborne illness

By attending the course, foodservice managers will learn about:
* identifying potentially hazardous foods and common errors in food handling
* preventing contamination and cross-contamination of food
* teaching and encouraging personal hygiene for employees
* complying with government regulations
* maintaining clean utensils, equipment and surroundings
* controlling pests

Foodborne illnesses can be prevented by following simple food safety practices. For more information about the Food Manager Certification Training course of Texas Cooperative Extension, called "Food Safety: It's Our Business," call Debbie Hailey at 325-625-4519, or Judy Gully in Taylor County, at 325-672-6048. Brochures are also available at the Extension Office.

Debbie Hailey will plan to conduct a food manager certification training course in Coleman County in March of this year. If you are interested in attending this training, please contact Debbie now, so she can make plans for the 2-day training series.
