BROWNWOOD, TX - Brownwood has a long history of working closely with each of the branches of the military, supporting our nation’s armed forces by providing not only a place to train, but also as home to many of the brave men and women who serve in order to carry out the country’s defense. On January 21, the community will honor those men and women with a special Day Of Honor.
"We want to take this opportunity to honor our returning soldiers from our 3rd Battalion, 112th Armor Regiment, 56th Brigade Combat Team, 36th Infantry Division. And it is just as important to honor the service members who have given the ultimate sacrifice in this war and previous wars; local service members currently serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and all other locations for our country; veterans from all wars; and the families of all the service members from this war and previous wars," Dr. Steve Kelly, who is helping organize the event, said.
The event will begin with a parade at 1 p.m. followed by a special public ceremony at 2 p.m. The parade will begin and end at the Brownwood Coliseum, which is where the ceremony will take place. The parade will follow the traditional parade route through downtown. The public is encouraged to line the route and show their appreciation by waving American flags and yellow ribbons.
"This community has always done so much to support the military families here and I hope they will line the route and really show their enthusiasm and patriotism," Brown County Veterans Service Officer Billy Murphey said. "That will mean so much to the people in the parade, to have their service to this country recognized like that."
The parade is open to all servicemen and women, as well as their families, who would like to participate. Murphey is helping to organize the parade and encourages any individual or organization interested in participating to contact him at 646-0335.
"I’ve contacted most of the service organizations in the area and they are going to be participating with a float or their presence," Murphey said. He has also contacted nearly a dozen area schools, many of which are expected to participate with bands, floats or marchers.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin immediately following the parade at 2 p.m. There will be special recognition of the many local service members, both past and current. Representatives from each of the military branches as well as several dignitaries are also scheduled to speak.
"The consensus from many groups and individuals is that we need to honor our local soldiers on their return while the memories are still fresh and enthusiasm is high," Kelly said.
The Santa Anna Lady Mountaineers defeated the Paint Rock Lady Maidens 57-32 in Tuesday night basketball action at Perry Gym in Santa Anna while the Mountaineers handed the Indians a 62-46 loss to send the visiting teams home without a win. See some of the game photos below and albums on the Sports Page.
I didn't make it to Robert Lee for Mountaineer basketball last Tuesday and didn't get home from Las Vegas until late Friday so I didn't make it to the Water Valley games and don't have any photos for you. Nobody sent me the scores so I am not sure what they were either. I know that both Varsity teams lost to Water Valley. Patrick did tell me he had a season best 31 points in the losing effort.
The Mountaineers are scheduled to take on the Novice Hornets in Novice Friday.

You might be from Santa Anna, or an Aggie, if... you thought your Sears Craftsman chainsaw was a lemon after you had to put two new chains on it after two seasons. Now this might not seem like all that much if you were using it a lot but with very little wood cutting I guess it might be cause for concern.
Only after seeing your brother-in-law putting chain/bar oil in his did you realize that it might have helped your chainsaw chains last a little longer had you been putting a little oil on the chain!
Nope, it wasn't me... I am not an Aggie...
I didn't get to make it to the County Stock Show over the weekend and haven't heard any results. If you have them or know of any from Santa Anna that did well please feel free to share... news@santaannanews.com.
I heard that Peyton Kuykendall won the Grand Champion Swine with his pig at the County Show and several others did well but don't have any specifics. Peyton's pig also won it's Hampshire weight class and Grand Champion Hampshire. Kristle Deleon had the Reserve Champion Swine with her pig.

Several called or asked Cindy for stock show photos last week but since I was gone to Las Vegas I wasn't able to take your orders. See the Special 2006 Santa Anna Livestock Show Photo Album for more Livestock Show photos. CD's of all the photos and professionally finished prints can be ordered still at the special rates for the stock show. Let me know which ones you want, what sizes, and how many you want by calling me at the house after 7 or emailing news@santaannanews.com. The photos on this page and in the album are not cropped for printing and not the originals which make better prints but feel free to print them if you like.
