Post Season Football Honors Continue to Roll in for Mountaineers

A couple of Mountaineers have continued to recieve post season football honors.

Junior Ben McIver and Senior Patrick Kerr were named to the Six-Man Illustrated's 2005 Six-Man All-American team which can be seen on the web at SixManNation.com. McIver was named Honorable Mention Offense - Running Back, and Kerr was named Honorable Mention Defense - Line Backer.

The Six-Man Illustrated 2005 Six-Man All-American team is made up of public and private school players from nine states including Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Maine, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Canadian Sascatchewan. Richland Spring's Tyler Etheridge was named this year's Most Valuable Player after recieving Co-Offensive Player of the Year last season. Etheridge shares that honor with the Hicks brothers Jared and Jordan two other standout Coyotes from a couple of years ago. While reading the article I happened to notice another familiar name to me and that was Vicente Ramirez from Fort Hancock. I worked with Vicente (Vince) when I worked at Brownwood Dr Pepper about ten years ago. He was one of the best Six-Man running backs ever. He lead "The Fort" to four of their many state championships losing his only game ever to Panther Creek in the 1992 Final which was Panther Creek's first State Championship. Vince was a heck of guy and a good helper working during the Summer at Dr Pepper while I think he was playing for Howard Payne.

Kerr named to All-West Texas Super Team

Patrick Kerr was also named to the San Angelo Standard-Times All-West Texas Super Team. The Super Team is made up of standout players from all classifications and Kerr was the only tight end on the team and one of a two Six-man players to make the team from District 11 with the other being Richland Springs' Tyler Etheridge.

Kerr, McIver, and Coach Fields named to All-West Texas Six-man Team

In a December 27th SanAngeloStandardTimes.com article Santa Anna's Coach Lloyd Fields was named as one of the All-West Texas Six-man Co-coaches of the year along with Kerry Gartman of Robert Lee. Fields was credited for coaching "Santa Anna to the playoffs" and "rebounding from a 1-3 start to go 7-5 with a playoff win over Blanket".

Santa Anna players named to the All-West Texas Six-man team were Ben McIver as a running back rushing for 2,375 yards and 37 touchdowns on 213 carries and Patrick Kerr as a tight end catching 52 passes for 803 yards and 19 touchdowns. It was also noted that Kerr "also could have made this team as a safety, where he tallied a whopping 152 tackles and seven interceptions".

Mountaineer Basketball versus Loraine

Cindy and I got to watch the Mountaineers as they won by a score of 47-45 in their Holiday match up with Loraine last Friday. The game was a battle to the finish as both teams were pretty evenly matched.

We missed the girls' game since it started before I got home from work but the Lady Mountaineers won their game and were once again led by the standout three point shooting of Tasha Zarate scoring eight three point shots in the first half.

See some of the game photos below and albums on the Sports Page.

10 Simple Steps to Protect Your Home from Wildland Fire

Submitted by Coleman County Extension Agent - Debbie Hailey - Family & Consumer Sciences

Texas Forest Service - Texas A & M University
December 22, 2005
Wildfire can strike home if you have not taken some steps to protect your house and property. The actions and precautions listed below are designed to help you prepare your home and lessen the threat of wildland fire damage to you and your property.

1. LPG tanks should be far enough away from buildings for valves to be shut off in case of fire. Keep area around the tank clear of flammable vegetation.

2. Store gasoline in an approved safety can away from occupied buildings.

3. All combustibles such as firewood, wooden picnic tables, boats, stacked lumber, etc. should be kept away from structures.

4. Clear roof surfaces and gutters regularly to avoid build-up of flammable materials such as leaves and other debris.

5. Remove branches from trees to a height of 15 feet or more. 6. In rural areas, clear a fuel break of at least 3 times the fuel length around all structures.

7. Have fire tools handy such as: ladder long enough to reach your roof, shovel, rake, and a bucket or two for water.

8. Place connected garden hoses at all sides of your home for emergency use.

9. Assure that you and your family know all emergency exits from your home.

10. Assure that you and your family know all emergency exits from your neighborhood.

Wild Fires Keep Area Firefighters Busy

After battling the fires West of Santa Anna for most of the New Year's Day, area firefighters continued to put out hot spots on Monday. While most of us had the day off Monday since New Year's Day fell on a Sunday, many of Santa Anna's volunteer firemen were called out to help keep the fire from doing more damage after they had fought the blaze the day before for more than twelve hours. The winds were not as much of a factor on Monday as they were on Sunday.

According to SAVFD Fire Chief, Bill Gilbreath, the fire burned between 3200 and 4000 acres of land owned by at least five different owners just this side of the Brown County line and there were no major structures damaged and no livestock killed. The fire, which was believed to be started by arching power lines, was cornered by County Roads 102 and 108 which helped the firefighters contain the fast moving blaze. Santa Anna firefighters were joined by other area fire departments and the Texas Forest Service in battling the blaze. Chief Gilbreath also expressed gratitude to those that helped as there were approximately 180 that offered help, including those that brought food and water for the firefighters. Long time fireman David Huggins even got a ride in a passing air ambulance helicopter to help spot fires from above.

Happy New Year!

I hope that all of you had a safe and Happy New Year!

New Years Eve we celebrated the New Year with friends and family.

New Years Day saw the return of high winds and fire. Smoke blanketed most of Coleman County and the rest of the Big Country as fires raged across the dry pastures. Closer to home the fires burned just North and West of Santa Anna towards the Santa Anna City Lakes. Most of Sunday afternoon and night firefighters battled the blaze which burned several hundred acres.

Don't forget the burn ban!
