Still No News for your Friday..

I am officialy changing the name of SantaAnnaNews.com to SantaAnnaNoNews.com... just kidding!

I got a couple of Santa Anna News Community Calendar entries from Jessica via e-mail Thursday night and that is about it.

Seems like I am not the only one having a bad week I guess. There have been several Olympic skaters and skiers take some falls during practice and competition. As the Olympics come to a close the USA is still in the medals race trailing Germany who is leading in Gold and Silver medals as well as the total.

That's about all I have... hope you have a weekend!

Still No News

I still don't have any news for your Wednesday, but I did get the Santa Anna News Community Calendar setup that I have been wanting to do. Even without news I hope that you are finding the many new features I have added to SantaAnnaNews.com useful. The Community Calendar link will appear with the other page links on the left each day.

I used the same free Calendars.net site that the school is using for theirs. The Calendars.net site was a little flaky and I had to reload the page a few times to get it to come up. I think Katrina Guerrero is maintaining the calendar for the school and she really does a good job with the whole SAISD website. I see school sites all the time that have an outdated site or one that is not maintained and that is certainly not the case with ours.

Send your birthdays, anniversaries, city, school, and community organization events to calendar@santaannanews.com and I will be happy to include them.

Basketball Playoffs

The Water Valley Lady Wildcats beat Roscoe Highland 46-33 to face the team from Roby who barely sqeaked by Brookesmith 36-33. The game will begin at 7:30 Friday at the tournament held at South Plains College Texan Dome in Levelland.

No News

Not really much news for your Wednesday. With no ballgames or activities with kids I know participating, I am considering taking a little break from the News for a while. I really want to continue so I may just start a once or twice a week effort instead of the current five days a week. Sometimes the News becomes too much about me.. especially on days when I don't have much real news.

I have been watching and enjoying the Olympics the last couple of weeks, along with a little American Idol and Extreme Makeover - Home Edition. The kids laugh at me for watching Idol but just like the Olympics and Makeover, I watch it for the stories about the peoples lives and dreams as much as anything. Those few shows that I do watch give me a lot of inspiration.

I am planning a Community Calendar made up entirely of reader input. It will include birthdays, anniversaries, city, school, and community organization events. If you read SantaAnnaNews.com and don't contribute then you aren't doing your part to keep it going. Send your Calendar entries to calendar@santaannanews.com.

I would also invite any of the political candidates to submit their statements.

A few of my friends and family still are sending me jokes and inspirational material so for Wednesday I decided to update the Funnies Page, which I haven't done for a while.

I know some of you, at least Jessica, Patrick, and Cindy, are enjoying the Puzzles Page. I should have or may have to put a warning on it that Soduku is addicting!

Basketball Playoffs

In Class A Division 2 area girls basketball playoffs:
Brookesmith continues to roll after defeating Santa Anna's District 12 Runner-up, Robert Lee, 53-25 last Tuesday and District 10 Runner-up Grandfalls-Royalty 55-45 last Friday at San Angleo Lakeview. The Lady Mustangs will take on the team from Roby at Jim Ned High School in Tuscola Tuesday at 6.

I had reported last week that District 12 Champ, Water Valley, who barely won over District 11 Runner-up Rochelle 47-44, would play the Highland girls which smoked the Priddy Girls 49-29. Their Friday matchup was actually against the team from Rankin which they beat 62-26. That will lead them to play the team from Highland this week.

See the UIL 1A-Division 2 Girls Basketball Playoffs page for the full bracket and latest results.

In Class A Division 2 area boys basketball District 12 Champion, Water Valley will face the Runner-up from District 11 Richland Springs and District 12 Runner-up Bronte will face District 11 Champ Eden.

See the UIL 1A-Division 2 Boys Basketball Playoffs page for the full bracket and latest results.

Santa Anna Boys Little Dribblers Team

The Santa Ann Boys Little Dribbler Team has been very busy playing basketball and winning as they have a 5-1 winning record and are scheduled for three more games this week as they enter the playoffs. Good Luck Guys!

They took time a couple of weeks ago to let me take their picture. Pictured are L-R Front: #11 Bo Beal, #31 Fabian Suarez, #00 Lucas Diaz, #5 Anthony Lopez, and Back: Coach Lori Beal, #14 Justin McElrath, #2 David Cupps, #25 Michael Valencia, and Coach Nora Valencia.

Weekend

I am afraid I don't have much news for your Monday. It was cold and I didn't get out too much. I piddled around in my half roofed garage and pulled nails out of some old boards that I am going to try and recycle. I know it sounds like a lot of fun..

Sunday I didn't get out too much either. The drizzle and below freezing temperatures Saturday night made for a cool picture but I didn't have my camera with me when I was out for trip to the store. The good thing was that the roads were not too bad, but we didn't have much rain either as far as I could tell.

I spent most of Sunday watching the Daytona 500 which turned out to be a pretty interesting race. If you care you probably already know, but just in case.. Jimmie Johnson won it for his first time in the Lowes Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. There was quite a controversy around the Lowes team after the crew chief got kicked out of the race after a post qualifying infraction earlier this week. There were a lot of new safety type rules in place and I think it will be OK after we get used to it.

That's about it for the weekend roundup.. have a good week and send me your news to news@santaannanews.com.

Texas Cooperative Extension to Offer Food Manager Certification Training Course

Food Safety: it's our business Submitted by Debbie Hailey - Coleman County Extension Agent Family & Consumer Sciences

Statistics indicate that food borne illness continues to be a health issue in the United States. Each year, 1 in 4 Americans will become sick, 1 in 1,000 will become hospitalized, and 5,000 will die due to a food borne illness. During the past legislative session, a statute was amended that allowed the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to require each food establishment to have one certified food manager.

Recently, the Texas Board of Health adopted rules to implement this statute. Many of you have already received a letter from the Texas Department of State Health Services regarding this. Under these new rules, each food establishment permitted by the Texas Department of State Health Services must have one certified food manager. New food manager certificates will be valid for 5 years.

Texas Cooperative Extension, Taylor County, is offering a Food Manager Certification Training Course. This program will be offered for $79 on February 27-28, at the Taylor County Extension Office. Cost includes: training, materials, and the State food manager certification examination. This program is designed to not only prepare food service managers to pass the certification examination; it will provide valuable education regarding the safe handling of food. Almost 50 cents of every dollar Americans spend on food is spent on meals prepared away from home. Therefore, careful attention to food safety will help keep customers safe and satisfied.

Food borne illnesses are estimated to cost thousands of dollars in lost wages, insurance, and medical bills. With these statistics, knowledge of how to prevent food borne illness is essential. The benefits of improved food safety include:
* Increased customer satisfaction
* Improved relationships with health officials
* Prevention of bad publicity and law suits due to food borne illness

By attending the course, food service managers will learn about:
* identifying potentially hazardous foods and common errors in food handling
* preventing contamination and cross-contamination of food
* teaching and encouraging personal hygiene for employees
* complying with government regulations
* maintaining clean utensils, equipment and surroundings
* controlling pests

Food borne illnesses can be prevented by following simple food safety practices. For more information about the Food Manager Certification Training course of Texas Cooperative Extension, called "Food Safety: It's Our Business," call Debbie Hailey at 325-625-4519, or Judy Gully in Taylor County, at 325-672-6048. Brochures are also available at the Extension Office.

Debbie Hailey will plan to conduct a food manager certification training course in Coleman County in March of this year. If you are interested in attending this training, please contact Debbie now, so she can make plans for the 2-day training series.
