Another one of Santa Anna's newest business's will be having their Grand Opening this Saturday, September 2nd. Kyra has owned That Santa Anna Store and Leatherworks since April and her Brandi, and Stephanie will be welcoming everyone as they have "Something for Everyone".

Meet the Mountaineers

Cindy and I made it over to meet the Mountaineers at Mountaineer Stadium Thursday night. There was a fairly light crowd. The Junior High Cheerleaders are selling Mountaineer T-shirts and the Booster Club is selling football programs so be sure and see the Cheerleaders for shirts and Janice Fellers for the football program ads.

Hail Santa Anna, Hail Mountaineers..

SAM likes it..

Huddle Up!

The event was also a Pep Rally for the Mountaineers as they travel the near 200 mile one-way trip to Coolidge on Friday. Where the heck is Coolidge you say? It is about 30 miles the other side of Waco but it is fairly easy to get to. You just head out US HWY 84 towards Brownwood and then my home away from home Goldthwaite, through Gatesville, McGregor and then Waco. Hwy 84 through Waco is also Waco Drive and just past Sam's Club you bear to the left onto Bellmead which is still HWY 84 about 15 to 20 miles the other side of Waco you turn Left on FM 73 and go another 10 miles or so to Coolidge and that is about as close as Google and I can get you.

I am afraid that Cindy and I won't make it to the game so any reports you have will be welcome. Go get 'em Mountaineers!

Friday Ramble - Hurricane Katrina

As I worry about the rain and my naked roof and watch TV this week and see the problems that those in New Orleans still have, suddenly that little bit of water dripping from the ceiling doesn't seem all that bad compared to those who lost their homes and loved ones.

As I wonder how I will pay for that $3 per gallon gas, I forget how lucky I am to have a car.

As I wonder how I will pay the electric bill I forget how lucky I am to have electricity.

Count your blessings and remember the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

More Friday Ramble - Parking Problem

I hear we are having parking problems in Santa Anna.. Yes, you heard me right.. parking problems in Santa Anna!

For years I have heard about how we wanted Santa Anna to be like more like Fredericksburg or Salado and have a successful downtown. Most towns have started "Main Street" type projects of revitalizing there downtown areas.

Just as we are on the verge of some really great things happening in Santa Anna can't we see that is a great problem to have! Who knows maybe some folks will have to enjoy a nice walk through town on the way to do some shopping. You know I can't ever remember it being easy to find a parking place in Fredericksburg the times when I was there. Part of the charm is just walking up one side of the street and then back down the other.

Passing through Comanche last Saturday I noticed that Harry's and the other business's on that side of the square lost their street parking to the four lane highway. The new wrought iron fencing lining the street keeps people from parking at the courthouse and walking across the street to get to those business's. Sure they now have parking in the back of the stores. Who knows maybe the State will come in and take care of our parking problem for us one of these days!

Still more Ramble - Friendly Competition

When I first got into the service station business in Santa Anna there were four other stations in town and two inconvenience stores. All of the stations were full service and typically were about ten cents per gallon higher than the "help your selfies"... not my terminology but that of many of the folks that traded with me.

Unlike the place we find ourselves in today with only one gasoline retailer in town, competition kept everyone honest. It became survival of the fittest. It made the good ones better and the bad ones go out of business. I remember one year that there were 13 different operators of the Texaco station and one of them didn't last a week. Competition and the laws of supply and demand are the very foundation of our free market economy and part of what makes America a great place to live.

A couple of my new favorite sayings: "Hoe your own weeds.." and "Grip it and rip it!" What they mean to me: mind your own business or take care of your own business before you stick your nose in someone else's and get rid of or remove the old and replace it with something new or better.. it's kind of like "Git'r Done" for me.

Grand Openings

It is Labor Day Weekend of course and what a great weekend to have a Grand Opening and we have two. Be careful on the roads, be careful if you are hunting, and watch out for hunters! Be sure and go by Double H Family Dining on Friday and Cool Creek Outfitters on Saturday for their Grand Openings! Or you can go both places on both days...

Cindy and I went in Double H before Meet the Mountaineers and grabbed a quick bite to eat along with Mom and Tex. We noticed Sybil Martin is now cooking for Shannon and let me tell you the cooks don't get any better than Sybil! More on Double H a little later... just go by for some good food and good folks.

We stopped by Cool Creek Outfitters afterwards and enjoyed visiting with Kyra, Donnie, and Janet Neff and Becky and Brandi Martin. Let me tell you this is a really cool place, especially if you are a hunter looking for some cool stuff or looking for the right gift to take home after hunting all weekend!

They are also Santa Anna's only place to buy hunting and fishing licenses and ammunition. You might even catch Donnie putting on a show with his piano!

Meet the Mountaineers

Meet the Mountaineers will be Thursday, August 31st, at 7PM. The Football and Volleyball Teams will be introduced along with the Band and Cheerleaders. A Pep Rally will also be held due to the driving distance to Coolidge on Friday. Ice Cream will be served afterward by the Booster Club. The Booster Club also is selling ads for the Football Program so if you want to purchase one please see Janice Fellers that night. Everyone come out and support the Mountaineers!

Portion Distortion:

Why Getting More Food for Your Money Could Be Waistful

Super-sized portions are thought to be one of the factors behind the rising prevalence of obesity in this country. While restaurants and fast food establishments are often blamed for large portions, research has shown that the sizes of food portions served at home are also increasing.

For many people, watching their food portions means weighing and measuring their food. However, there is an easier way to eat healthy portions of food. Come learn about the Healthy Weight Plate during "Portion Distortion, Why Getting More Food for Your Money Could Be Waistful," offered by Debbie Hailey, County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences. Also included will be tips on Meal Planning. The program will be held Tuesday, September 19, at 6:00 PM, at the Loaves & Fishes, Corner of Pecan and Nueces St.

For more information about the program, call Debbie Hailey at 625-4519. Educational programs of Texas Cooperative Extension are open to all people without regard to race, color, sex, disability, religion, age or national origin.

More Rain

Monday we had another inch and half of rain. SantaAnnaNews.com Official Rain Reporter, Tex Wright confirmed that he had 1.3 through Sunday evening and another 1.5 through Monday evening.

Roofing Rule #49 - Don't worry about the tea colored water dripping off the ceiling fans, the carpet will soak it up!(see Roofing Rule #48 below)

Levi Quinton Daniel

Stephanie and Josh Daniel welcomed their first baby Tuesday, August 22nd at 2:25 PM. Levi Quinton Daniel was born weighing 6lbs 13oz and was 19" long. Present at time of birth was Josh and Stephanie (of course) Quinton Daniel and Stephanie's parents Cheryl and Steven Waters of Radcliff KY, which is near FT. Knox.

Rain

My Santa Anna National Bank rain gauge said I had one and one-half inches of rain Sunday morning. My Coleman County Telephone Coop gauge said I had a little over an inch and a bug. I think he must have drank some of the water before it drowned him! Tex told me he had an inch and a quarter and a bug too.

We, Patrick and I, were roofing Saturday afternoon when it started to rain. It was the fourth time we have been rained off the roof in the last, nearly, two months. This time was no different than the last times as it stopped shortly after we got everything covered up, but just enough that you are done for the day!

About 4 AM Sunday morning another storm blew in and dumped the rest. Sunday evening the rain ran us off the roof again and it showered off and on in the late evening.

Roofing Rule #43 - Keep a tarp or piece of plastic large enough to cover your naked roof handy.

Roofing Rule #44 - No matter how hard you try to avoid it there will be a hole in your tarp or plastic.

Roofing Rule #45 - The hole in your tarp or plastic will act as a funnel.

Roofing Rule #46 - Gravity forces fluid down a funnel.

Roofing Rule #47 - Water will exit the attic cavity of your house through the holes in your ceiling which usually are there to supply electricity to a light fixture and/or ceiling fan.

Roofing Rule #48 - A wet/dry vac is required roofing equipment

More Heroes..

The list grows...

Some of my heroes I had to leave off because you wouldn't really understand without some explanation and this is not the time nor the place. But it seems like there is always someone that is overlooked. My short list of females has my Mom at the top and Saturday was her Birthday.. no, I didn't forget this year but it was a close call! ... and no Jessica, you haven't made it to the list yet but I will give you an Honorable Mention!

I am blaming this one on old age, mine and not necessarily his, but I left my Uncle and Mom's brother, Robert Coder, off of my heroes list. I realized I had made the mistake when I got his weekly article for Coder's Corner which he has written for the News for the last several months. Be sure and take a look at it!

Texas Cooperative Extension to Offer Certified Food Manager Two-Day Certification Course

Food Safety: it's our business Submitted by Debbie Hailey - Coleman County Extension Agent Family & Consumer Sciences

Texas Cooperative Extension in San Saba County, is offering a Food Manager Certification Training Course. This program will be offered on September 6 & 7 at Housing Authority Meeting Room, 1601 W. Dry, San Saba.

This exciting, hands-on food safety course will equip you with the latest food safety principles and practices and will help prepare you for the State Certified Food Manager Examination. The cost of this course is $79 and includes the course, certification examination, course book, all course materials, and the State Food Manager Certification Examination. The deadline for sending in money and registration is August 31. 2006. There will also be a two-day training class in Taylor County on October 23 and 30. Watch for more information about that course later.

This program is designed to not only prepare food service managers to pass the certification examination; but it will also provide valuable education regarding the safe handling of food. Almost 50 cents of every dollar Americans spend on food is spent on meals prepared away from home. Therefore, careful attention to food safety will help keep customers safe and satisfied.

Foodborne illnesses are estimated to cost thousands of dollars in lost wages, insurance, and medical bills. With these statistics, knowledge of how to prevent foodborne illness is essential. The benefits of improved food safety include:
* Increased customer satisfaction
* Improved relationships with health officials
* Prevention of bad publicity and law suits due to foodborne illness

Foodborne illnesses can be prevented by following simple food safety practices. By attending the course, food service managers will learn about:
* identifying potentially hazardous foods and common errors in food handling
* preventing contamination and cross-contamination of food
* teaching and encouraging personal hygiene for employees
* complying with government regulations
* maintaining clean utensils, equipment and surroundings
* controlling pests

For brochures, Registration Forms and more information about "Food Safety: It's Our Business," the Food Manager Certification Training course of Texas Cooperative Extension, call Debbie Hailey at 325-625-4519, or come by the Extension Office at the Coleman County Courthouse for Registration Forms.
