A Little Friday Ramble

Well I haven't had much to say this week mostly because I have been working my tail off! But it has been the kind I get paid for and I always have said, "It's times like these I am glad that I get paid by the hour!"

It certainly has been a welcome relief from the roofing but I sure wish I was finished with it. Two or three more weeks and I will be through with the house and then I am taking a break before we start on the barn and storage building.

We missed some good shots at rain this week but maybe the rain will keep me off the roof for another week... wouldn't that be nice...

There is a lot going on this weekend starting with Friday we have a new restaurant opening up where the old Laundry used to be across from the old Jacobs Feed and what used to be the tile plant. It is owned by Shannon Enriquez and they are calling it Double H. It will be family dining and they are open all day for all meals. I will try to get a better idea for you on what all they will be doing.

I think the Lady Mountaineers are playing in the Albany volleyball tournament.

The Coleman County Telephone Coop will be having it's annual meeting at the Civic Center/Armory with registration starting at 6 PM and the meeting starting at 7. I am sure Cindy and I will walk over and we will see you there.

There will be some pads popping at Mountaineer Stadium Saturday morning starting at 10:00 with the JV and Varsity scrimmaging Gordon.

A couple of post script notes about this week's News:
Regarding the 4H folks, Jan Heath has also been a Coach and Teacher at Santa Anna High School.
The photo of me and my family in 1969 on what I think was our first visit to Santa Anna. It was taken in front of my Granny, Audrey Wright's, house on Avenue C looking North towards the East Santa Anna Mountain and across the baseball field. It sure looked hot and dry and it was, the best I remember. Note the yellow army helmet was my Uncle Lynn's as he was in the National Guard and one of my early heroes and still is I might add. It is kind of funny now that I think about it but I pretty much had a burr haircut and wore cowboy boots, always tucked in of course, almost all of my life until we moved to Santa Anna in 1975. Boy then things sure did change!

Many of you may wonder why I keep putting the Attorney General articles on the News. Sure it fills a news gap but I want to show you that there are a lot of bad people on the Internet and they may be a lot closer than you think. With the new developments this week in the Ramsey Case it just goes to show you that you need to pay attention to your kids and everything that goes on around them. Take care of your kids and know what they are doing on the Internet!

I don't mean to scare you or your kids away from it because it a valuable tool and critical to their futures, just pay attention.

Have a good weekend and don't forget school starts Monday!

ATTORNEY GENERAL ABBOTT OBTAINS INDICTMENTS AGAINST TWO HOUSTON AREA MEN FOR CHILD SEX CRIMES

Christopher R. Kronshagen, Weston Lee Starks allegedly tried to meet children for sex

HOUSTON – Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and Fort Bend County District Attorney John F. Healey, Jr. obtained indictments Monday against Christopher R. Kronshagen, 37, of Conroe, and Weston Lee Starks, 24, of Houston on one count each of attempted aggravated sexual assault of a child, attempted sexual performance by a child and criminal solicitation of a minor.

The two men allegedly used the Internet to sexually proposition undercover Cyber Crimes Unit investigators who had assumed the identities of underage females. If convicted, Kronshagen and Starks each face two to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

“National statistics released last week show that one of every seven children will receive a sexual solicitation while online,” said Attorney General Abbott. “Such acts against children cannot and will not be tolerated. I especially appreciate the outstanding cooperation between our Cyber Crimes Unit and the Sugar Land Police Department in these two cases.”

Kronshagen was arrested May 26 when he showed up at a Sugar Land gas station for the alleged sexual encounter. He was employed as a financial advisor for an investment corporation at the time of the arrest.

Starks was also surprised to find Cyber Crimes Unit investigators waiting to arrest him on May 11 when he showed up at a Sugar Land apartment for the meeting he had allegedly arranged for sex.

Attorney General Abbott has made pursuing sexual predators a top priority of his administration. The Cyber Crimes Unit, which targets online predators, and the Fugitive Unit, which locates convicted child sex offenders who have violated the terms of their parole and could be stalking children, have combined for over 485 arrests of such offenders since Abbott took office in December 2002. His office also has obtained convictions against 47 men on child pornography charges.

Extension 4-H Volunteers Honored At Silver Clover Banquet

4-H

Brent and Renea McMillan and William and Jan Heath were honored in San Angelo on August 10, at the Silver Clover Banquet, for their outstanding service as 4-H Leaders in Coleman County.
Writer: Steve Byrns

SAN ANGELO-Texas Cooperative Extension's annual Silver Clover Recognition Banquet celebrated its 39th year Aug. 10 with a meal and ceremony at San Angelo's Original Zentner's Steak House. This year's event recognized 31 individuals and institutions who are instrumental to the success of District 7's 4-H youth program. The honorees were selected through a competitive process. The selection committee is comprised of electric cooperative personnel, a leader from another Extension district and an Extension agent from District 7.

The banquet is the only 4-H related event of its kind in Texas. It has been sponsored by the rural electric cooperatives serving the area covered by Extension's 23-county West Central or "District 7" district. The sponsoring cooperatives are: Central Texas Electric Cooperative; Coleman County Electric Cooperative; Concho Valley Electric Cooperative; Hamilton County Electric Cooperative; Big Country Electric Cooperative; Pedernales Electric Cooperative; Southwest Texas Electric Cooperative and Taylor Electric Cooperative.

The evening's honorees from Coleman County included Brent and Renea McMillan and William and Jan Heath.
Brent & Renea McMillan are truly successful 4-H parents, with 2 daughters who have received State 4-H Scholarships. Their involvement, however, doesn't stop with their own children. They have helped with numerous 4-H Projects through the years, including FCS projects as well as livestock. Brent & Renea are generous with their time and resources as Feed Barn owners, and their expertise as experienced 4-H Parents.

Since William and Jan Heath moved to Coleman, they have been totally involved in 4-H, with their children's projects, and helping other 4-H Members. They implemented the Food Fair competition at the Coleman County Stock Show, with plans to add a Craft Fair in the future. William, a Coleman County Game Warden, has provided programs for 4-H Clubs and Camps and serves as the 4-H Council Co-Treasurer. Jan has been an adult leader in Food Show, Fashion Show, and other educational activities, and will serve this year as the Adult Co-Leader for the Coleman 4-H Club.

Happy Anniversary!

Some 37 years ago a tall skinny fella came into my Mom's life. Mom met him while selling Avon door to door as a single mom to make ends meet. He bought some after shave and well the rest is history.

He has always been a pretty special guy to Mom and to me too. On August 15th of 1969 he married Mom and all of the sudden had a family of five.

Happy 37th Anniversay to Tex and Pat Wright!

Pat and Tex Wright - 1969

Tex, Pat, Alys, Danna, and James. I think this was our first trip to Santa Anna and before they got hitched maybe. The photo was probably taken by my Aunt Judy. I am sure Mom will correct me if I am wrong!

Update on Ethan

I confirmed that Ethan has indeed taken a turn for the worse. He is still at Cooks and is now on the 6th Floor rehab facility. He has been there since early June and will be for a minimum of 6-8 more weeks.

He had started to walk again during therapy but has not been able to for the last week or so. Due to his young age, the recovery is brighter than if he were older. The hospital stay is getting longer and sometimes hope and kind words are all you have. Please continue to send cards and words of encouragement to Ethan and his family.

Santa Anna Elementary Student Receives Treatment for Encephalitis

Ethan Mendoza, age 8 and a student at Santa Anna Elementary is currently hospitalized at Cooks Children's Medical Center in Ft. Worth due to a diagnosis of Encephalitis. He has been there since early June and will likely remain there for several weeks due to physical therapy and rehabilitation.

Ethan is the son of Sandi Watson of Santa Anna. Send any well wishes to Ethan Mendoza, Room 2816, Cooks Children's Medical Center, 801 7th Avenue, Ft. Worth, Texas 76104. If he changes rooms, his mail will follow him.

Please remember Ethan and his family during his recovery.
