A fire severely damaged the rear of the home of Virgil Lancaster on 1205 Ave A earlier this week. Mr. Lancaster, who is in a wheelchair, was in the home at the time of the fire and was rescued by some folks that were doing yard work for him at the time of the blaze. No injuries were reported in the fire but the house appears to be a total loss due to extensive fire, heat, and smoke damage.

Well it is almost time for the Annual Santa Anna Funtier Days sponsored by the Santa Anna Chamber of Commerce along with the World Championship Bison Cookoff sponsored by the Santa Anna Historical Development Organization. I don't have any details or a schedule of events. You can probably find them in the Coleman paper or maybe at ColemanCDV.com.
Anyhow it is just around the corner and one local team has taken advantage of a warmup opportunity at my home away from home in Mills County this past weekend at the 2006 Mills County BBQ and Goat Cookoff held in the Goldthwaite City Park. The Young Guns Cookoff Team consisting of the younger generations of Santa Anna Guthries, Perrys, Cheaneys, and friends placed 2nd out of 44 teams in the Ribs Category.

I heard that this year's Bison Cookoff will see some change in the lineup of one local team as the long time "Twin Peaks" is losing a Hugg and gaining a Bell. I understand that one of the Peaks has had a little trouble finding his way to the door recently so maybe Ole' Tom can show him the way!
There have been a lot of tennis, track, and field events going on around school recently and Becky Martin shared these SAISD team photos with me:

Phony Real Estate Agents Steal Buyers’ Cash
Greg Abbott
Attorney General of Texas
Recently my office has sued one company and learned of others placing bogus for-sale signs in front of vacant homes in an effort to swindle prospective buyers, many of whom are non-English speakers. The scam works by consumers contacting the phone number on the sign and then meeting with the scammer who often poses as a real estate agent. The scammer then tries to convince the consumer to write a check for a deposit on the home which will supposedly be applied to the price of the sale at closing. Please be careful.
In reality you would simply be handing over money to a scammer for a home that is not actually for sale. Sometimes the scammer may even go as far as to ask you to provide your banking information as well as copies of your tax statements. This could cause you the double problem of losing your money and having your identity stolen.
Our office suggests you take several steps to avoid this scam:
When working with a person who claims to be a real estate agent, make sure that he or she is licensed by the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC). Call TREC at (800) 250-8732 or (512) 459-6544 locally to confirm that the agent is licensed, even if you see a business card. Before paying anything to purchase property, check with the county appraisal district to see who really owns the property. Always have a title search performed before signing closing documents. Don't do deals on a handshake. In the past scammers have swindled consumers out of tens of thousands of dollars by presenting them with handwritten contracts for homes to which they did not hold title. Be very wary of sales offering very low down payments, especially if the property is vacant.

I recently heard from Connie Culpepper Massey that her brother James Culpepper has now been moved to Lemoore Naval Air Station in Lemoore, CA. He is still serving with the Navy and resides there on base with his wife Karyn and two daughters, Taralyn and Tabitha.
I also recently heard from Clay Stewardson all the way from Hong Kong last week and then again from Thailand this week. Clay is aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.

Lincoln Makes History Pierside In Laem Chebang
Story Number: NNS060421-12

USS Abraham Lincoln
By Journalist 1st Class (SW) Joaquin Juatai, USS Abraham Lincoln Public Affairs
LAEM CHEBANG, Thailand (NNS) -- USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) made history April 20, mooring in Laem Chebang, Thailand, the first time a U.S. aircraft carrier has done so.
Previously, carriers visiting Thailand anchored off the coast and used liberty launches; a lengthy and dangerous way for Sailors to go ashore in Laem Chebang, said Master Chief Boatswain’s Mate (SW) Robert W. Dean.
According to Dean, a Navy harbor pilot from Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, being pierside is a much better alternative.
“You're giving Sailors a safer atmosphere for getting ashore,” said Dean, who was specifically sent to Lincoln to assist the ship in getting into and out of Laem Chebang safely.
In the past, the liberty launch system presented a much more dangerous shore-to-ship evolution, as the prevailing winds off the coast of the Pattaya Beach area tend to pick up in the evenings, said Dean.
“You had to wade in to shore [from the liberty boats] in the past,” he added.
Lincoln is visiting Thailand as part of a scheduled Western Pacific deployment. Sailors plan to enjoy liberty, participate in community service projects and take advantage of tours offered by Lincoln’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation division during the port visit.
